Neat video. I've been toying with the idea of buying one of those skidding cones, but they are proud of them. Guess the bulk drives up the shipping costs too. Just today I was eyeing a 60-gallon pickle barrel, wondering if I could heat one end of it enough to get a slight cone out of it...
There are some different videos on YouTube, one which looks very simple to make and some that would take some more time and materials. https://youtube.com/shorts/aJy--2HbUpY?si=jdwUxyYI7FXKCBCt Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I picked up a portable winch back in 2019 when I had access to some acreage for dead and down. Only used it a couple times to pull some trees up steep slopes. Coming from using electric winches on vehicles for the last 35 years or so, I found the portable winch to be somewhat cumbersome with a lot of gear that needed to be carried into the woods. While it did its job, I haven't used it since 2020 and will most likely be selling it this year (I now have a logging winch for the tractor so the portable winch is somewhat redundant). I also picked up their 'backpack' version for when I went moose hunting back in 2020. Unfortunately I didn't end up using it (the hunt was a bust), but I plan on hanging on to that model as it will still come in handy for hauling harvested bears out of the woods. Wish I had taken some better pictures but these are from one of the times I used the portable winch to haul a blowdown up a steep slope (much steeper than it looks in the picture). The tree was at the very bottom of the slope. While the skidding cone does cost some $$, it's worth every penny as far as I'm concerned.
A blue 55 gal barrel can easily be made into a skidding cone. You can heat one end and stretch the center out, or you can cut an arc out of the side, roll it into a cone, and either melt it together or stitch it together with heavy wire.
I plan on putting the capstan winch up for sale in the next month. Not sure if you would still be interested and not sure how I would go about shipping it (I know people ship motors all the time however I have not done so...guess I would have to drain all the fluids?). Was planning more to sell locally just to keep it simple. Price-wise, I was planning to list it around $1,400 to $1,500. It's near to being in new condition (only used a few times) and it comes with the full kit: PCW5000 winch, hard transport case, brand new rope, rope bag, hitch plate/anchor, snatch block, and 2 carabiners. New cost varies from around $1785.00 and up and that doesn't come with the hard case. The only other PCW5000 I see for sale locally around me is a well-used one with nothing extra (not even the rope) for $1200.00. Haven't run it in a few years so I need to drain any old gas and get it fired up before I list it for sale but since you had mentioned possible interest, wanted to put it out to you first.
Well thanks for remembering. You wouldn't hurt my feelings a lick if you sold it locally. I didn't even thinking about the shipping cost/process when I mentioned being interested. Add to that, I'm not sure I'll be on this property for too much longer and not sure what's in store for me next. Would probably be best to pass at this time. Thanks again.
Totally understand and I can empathize with your situation, lots of life changes going on at this end as well. Sorry to hear you possibly won't be at your property and best of luck with whatever the future holds.
Thanks for the will wishes. It'll be my choice to leave if/when the day comes. Hopefully I can find my happy place.
