Some guys were clearing the edges of the parking lot with a saw and skid steer. I asked and they even helped me load! I know it’s garbage wood but a rare scrounge for me, so one load is enough. There’s one short Norway maple log on top too.

Nice, I’ve got a lead on a big fallen short leaf, or loblolly. I have not seen it in real life to make a real id. Never thought I would travel to get pine, but it’s big and straight. I’d go Saturday, but deliveries are still getting in the way of fun. :woodsign:

Uh oh!!! :startled: Hope the BL wasn't touched!

Been a while since I've scored catalpa. Hard to find it nice and straight. Kinda grows like box elder. It reminds me of sassafras in terms of grain texture and drying time.

    Is the encampment still there?

The tent is gone. This was cut from the other side of the building exactly where you were cutting that day you came up. There were 3 guys working there today, and the boss said they were cutting more tomorrow and just tossing it further into the woods. He said eventually they were going to take down most of the trees on the far left side, which were huge, but unfortunately mostly willow and cottonwood. But we'll see when the time comes. You'll be the first to know if there's any fresh BL on the ground ;)

I want the cottonwood! JK. I know it might interest you. ;)

Any decent logs for you? I don't recall what was there except the bigger cottonwoods. Don't recall much BL standing on that side.

I'm really not itching for what's there at the moment. Small Norway maples, maybe a couple smaller dead barkless BL further in. I'll have to scout it out more though. Depending on if what they take down is still there later this year, I'd go back and pick away at it. There's a couple mulberries further in too but I don't know how far into the woods they're clearing.

Im curious of your opinion of the catalpa when you process it. Peculiar, but pleasant aroma IMO.

I got a small amount 2-3 years ago and thought it was some of the easiest splitting wood out there, right up there with black walnut. Agreed, the smell is unique too. These rounds I got today were cut right before I got there and were very fragrant. Aromatic in kind of a spicy way.

So apparently there's a market for catalpa wood for carvers, turners, and general hobbyists. I think I'll save some for turning blanks and stock in general, to put on eBay once it's sawed into rough blanks and dry. As I recall, for firewood purposes it was pretty unremarkable.

Yes comparable to sassy BTU wise, but very rot resistant. Sassy is too. I have some stock here to make raised planters for her daughter.

Kooky for tulip poplar and cottonwood today. buZZsaw BRAD tipped me off to this “trash” wood score yesterday :handshake: It turns out that the young guy who had it is a seller and he can’t sell this stuff. Fine by me; I’ll burn it. After the amount of wood I burned through and sold this year, I could use some more fast drying filler wood for next season.

Not bad. Gotta get me some of the same. Fast drying and good to mix in bundles.

Nice scores. We cut a catalpa probably 6-7 years ago for a lady. Last time I saw it, logs were still pretty solid

I gifted a hand turned Catalpa ladle that I bought at Bunyan last fall to someone at Christmas. Have never used any for heat.

Right in town, maybe a 10 minute ride if traffic is light. Now I have plenty of rounds to try that Jonsered out in :)

The young guy texted me again asking if I wanted the rest of the cottonwood that he had. As a bonus he threw in this crotch section of live cut green ash too. I think I now have enough shoulder wood for next year.
