    Nice work, brother. I thought it was sass too, or Sourwood. It has a similar bark, bees make some great honey from Sourwood.

    I'd say you made out thinking you had gum but actually having sassafras. Gum isn't work the time. It doesn't split, it tears.

    I had a friend who is in the firewood business show me a simple trick with gum, and it does work. Don't try and split gum down the center, in half first. Widdle away from the outside and work in, rolling the log and making smaller splits. You don't get the best of splits, but it will work. I have about 2/3 cord right now and many of the rounds were 18"+. :yes: I know how many feel about it, as I do, kinda like the folks that get Elm. If I get it, I'm gonna burn it.
    Yes! I actually thought I had gum at first. There was zillions of the sweet gum seeds all over the place. I went back to where the tree came down and there is a gum tree not a foot away from it. I'll be getting a variety of wood here in the next couple weeks. I even have some Holly in the mix.

    Two sweet scores buddy :thumbs::woodsign:

    Lot's s sassafras around my parts and lots them on the back edge of the property. I've burnt plenty of it, not bad stuff and as mentioned very easy to split. I actually like splitting by hand it's that easy, for some exercise.

    The bugs especially carpenter ants love em and carve them up good!

    You are hoarding up a storm there Dave. Nice that you can split that and not deal with mud. The snow cover here should be gone by Wednesday and i hafta get my a$$ in gear restocking inventory.

    Same, I am behind, I need to use this year to replenish my stock.

    If I ever get the $$ to take down these 6 large oaks, I'll be in business......easier said than done!

    But it works, and I didn't know about it either until I was shown. :whistle: Don't feel that way. everything we do is a learning curve, I've learned many things on here and even the fact that I have been burning nearly 50 years. o_O Everyone has something to give, if you just take the time to listen and read.:yes:

    I got all the Sasafrass split up and the little bit of Holly I had. I'm going back over a bit later, I cut up a couple snapped Oak limbs that are down, good size. Kinda whooped though....

    Thanks, I want to/got to be doing this now, I can't stand it when the heat gets up around 80º. I move kinda slow anyway, but at anything above 80º it becomes almost sluggish like... I don't want to function!
