As a wood seller I've heard numerous complaints over the years...wood not dry enough, incorrect volume, messy, inconsistent sizes are the ones I mostly hear mostly from new customers about other sellers. Only once in my earlier years did I get a complaint about not dry enough and that was one year old red oak before FHC educated me about it requiring multiple years to dry. I picked up a new customer this season. Old friend of the family that I've sold three loads of nuggets/shorts to since December. Tells me its the best wood he's ever burned in 25 years after the first drop. He wanted more, but I only had barkless black locust nuggets to which he agreed despite the higher price. I explained BL to him...burns like anthracite coal, higher BTU, coaling qualities, hard to cold start etc. He calls me yesterday asking if I could take the wood back??? WTH??? It burns too hot BRAD! It overheated the house! Small post war cape with a 25year old Hearthstone wood stove in the living room. Ill mix it with the other guys wood for now he says. I saw the other guys full sized splits and mostly underseasoned oak! Over the years i've received numerous compliments for how well my wood burned and being the correct volume, but this is a first! Well I did warn him. Funny how most burners don't know the difference.
Someone got to stokin before realizing what they had. It's just shock from burning it in the style he's forced to burn his wet wood. Tell him to cut as much air as he can once it's going and see if it's any better. Mixing will help too.
We got our first 2 complaints this year as well. One friend asked us not to bring hickory anymore, it was putting on the fireworks show when he was stirring the coals, said it burned great, but popped to much. Other lady didn't want the hickory/white oak mix again. She needs 14-16" splits, what we had wasn't really dry enough, but she had to have some. We carried her a tote of dry 18" that would fit at the front of her stove and we told her to mix a couple short splits in with the dry, evidently she forgot...we're stocking both friends up with 16" red oak for next year.
Update: Had a BL customer needing another load. Im snowed in at storage so I offered him a load of BL nuggets I have here. He accepted, then it hit me I could take this back. Called him and he decided to keep it as his other guy didn't come through with wood. Debating on keeping him as a nugget customer as I generate a fair amount during the year and started giving them to a friend. being really close by is a plus. Wondering what next year will bring in terms of customer issues!
Even on Eastern Long Island we still have 7" on the ground. And it was 50 and bright and sunny today...
Yes over a foot on the ground yet. My BL storage down the street never was cleared into the back. He works in NYC and is home half the time. Only clears the front. Some good melting today. I had to wheelbarrow wood out and it was muddy as hell. Had to put boards down to limit ruts and squish factor. PITA, but it is what is is.
I have 18” on the ground right now, and the piles along my driveway are a good 4-6’ high. The upcoming rain and warmer temperatures this week should knock a lot of that down but I bet we’ll have snow for a while yet
Same here. With my inventory way down and extended snow cover its not started out smooth. Had a good January sales wise, but with snow cover it set me back vs last years sales in February. Have a delivery today with three bundle order for this week...that is if I can get to the shed. Have to shovel my way in.
Wow, all of our snow has been gone for a week or more already...accept for the biggest plow piles, or full time shade.
It was all over the place but my best guess is about 18" +- . We had spots that were over 20" and others that were 14". I gauged it off my picnic table and all the benches and top had 20" to 18" around there. Either way, it was MORE than enough for here!
