Well, depending on which direction this storm goes, We may get an A$$ Whoooooping with snow. Gonna load up the 2 week rack with Oak. I keep a 3 day supply inside.
This morning was one of the coldest I can remember here. I woke up in the middle of the night to find my wife sleeping on the couch next to the stove with the dogs. I loaded it up around 1:20 am and when I came down at 5 it was 68 in the house and -4 outside. Stuffed the stove full and drove to work. I watched the thermometer on my dash read as low as -9 and as high as zero on my way to work. I made a note of it being -7 at the airport I drive by and later this morning the local weather man confirmed Danbury Airport had a reading of -7. Got home around 3 today after being at work all day and the house was at 66 with the stove on coals. Filled it back up. Supposed to be near the same temps tomorrow and even colder on Saturday.
My 97yr old uncle from SD visited yesterday and I asked him if he felt like he was back in SD He said yep! We were in a parking lot surrounded by 8’ snow piles. Maybe get 6-8” more this weekend. It’s reinvigorated my view that living up North is no bueno for me. 32 deg and secondaries are still not scraped. Multiple car pileups are common place. Tow trucks, firewood dealers and insurance companies are stacking Benjamin’s. Burning oak, delivering wood and slip sliding away.
I Lived in Groton/Mystic not far from the US Navy Sub Base. I remember several days in 2009 and 2010 we had mornings of -5 and one morning was -10. I was teaching at the USCG Academy in New London, and we had all the heat CRANKING in those old brick buildings, we were lucky to get it to 60º in the class rooms!
Good lord that's cold. I took the "scenic" route to work today to get the engine up to temp but it took a while. I guess I'll try a longer route tomorrow...
That would happen at our old house every few years. 1920's construction stone foundation, dirt crawlspace, no heat or insulation. Id have to put a salamander heater in the crawlspace opening and blast it for a half hour.
-9/71 12 mph wind. Elm It will probably go a little lower. I think this will be the coldest night of the season so far.
5/68, oak chunks and uglies for the morning fire. Ready for a slight warm up to get back to splitting!
12º at 0600. Nice hot coal bed this morning, one round of Oak and 2 splits in, temps at 78º inside now. Today is our, (trash collection day). I feel for those guys today...
Don't remember if we talked about this but my son also taught there. They even kept him off the sub for a while so he could teach. He really enjoyed that.
-12 here. Just reloaded with oak and locust. Doesn’t look like the frigid temps are going away anytime soon.
-8 right now. Colder than forecast showed by about 10*. The wood pile has a pretty big dent in it from the last 7 -10 days, that's for sure.
2/69 - getting up to 20 today with a steady breeze. This smaller morning reload of hickory and oak is putting out the heat.
