Thought we could use a thread on everyone’s storm prep. I started a new pallet pen just so it’s established before the snow fall. Was planning on bringing some more wood in my basement before Snowmaggedon but got a message from one of my customers last night. She needs wood!!! I’ll have to ask her how her new heat pump is doing this afternoon. Can’t be too good if she’s running out of wood already. A half cord of Black Locust should help. What’s everyone else doing?
Not much prep to do here besides top off the 5 gallon gas can in case we need the generator. Plenty of wood staged up ready to go; more than enough for the next week without needing to bring more in from the backyard. I made the mistake of grabbing a few things from the grocery store just now. That’s where the real panic is
I see you’re stocking the good stuff. I was caught with my pants down a little. I knew the snow was coming but the extended cold I wasn’t aware of. Maybe tomorrow I’ll drop some in my basement. Gonna be cold tho.
You don't have to get ready if you stay ready. Just needed to make sure my mom has plenty of wood ready to go, the gas cans are topped off, and the goats have plenty of food, water, and fresh bedding. That's pretty much a daily/weekly to-do list for me anyway. I might put the plow on the quad tomorrow once the snowfall forecast firms up some.
Grabbed some gas just in case and going to bring a bunch of wood inside later on tonight and tomorrow before the bitter cold and winds pick up. Already did (well my wife did) some food shopping earlier in the week and grabbed some comfort foods and things to make while trapped in the house...........Made sure to unload that haul of wood I had in my truck bed from yesterday and bring it around back while the WheelHorse still can before the snow. Didn't need that stuck in my truck bed all that time as lord knows how long this now is going to be sticking around with temps being low all next week.
Fortunately in the PNW we don’t have a lot of big weather events. Wind and rain sometimes cause the most damage. We sit up on a hill so flooding isn’t an issue and the nearby hills cause a lot of the wind to blow over the top of our home. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It’s definitely cold here in Iowa, but no snow event forecasted. I’ve got a good bit of Mulberry, Oak, Ash and Elm in the garage ready to keep us warm. This morning it was -12 outside and a nice 72 inside.
Just finished moving some Osage Orange up to the house with beech, black locust and red oak. Gas cans and vehicles are topped off. Hoping the majority of the snow stays south of us. We are just getting good solid fishable ice on inland lakes.
I haven't been burning today even though the temps are below zero. My wood stove is upstairs and the garage is heated downstairs. I have to run the furnace to get heat in the garage. If I am burning wood, that doesn't allow the furnace to run much and if I turn up the thermostat, the house would get too warm.. I guess I have first world problems. Temps have been below zero since last night and may not get above zero until sometime Saturday.
We got a few groceries on Wednesday. Fuel was already good for the generator. Topped off the snow blower. Topped off the vehicles this morning. Filled the bird feeders (gotta look after them too). Moved wood up from the driveway to the side of the house. Only thing I have left to do is move some wood into the house from outside. The cold won't deter me. I don't like bringing in wood when there is a foot plus of snow on the ground though.
Nothing really Im almost always ready. Plus we're only forecasted to get 3". I wish we were going to get blasted.
The last time we had a storm of this magnitude, the town used back hoes and front end loaders to supplement their plowing equipment. The front end loader tore my picket fence down. I now have 8 reflectors on it. Blue and red to hopefully catch their eye. I also have one I can pull up as the snow piles increase. We have a funeral wake to attend in the city. Once we get home, other than bringing in firewood, that begins indoor projects weekend which will likely consist of me making sure my recliner is in good repair.
What are people going to do? Well, one of the best things is to not listen to the doom and gloom folks; mainly the media. It is danged cold outside and inside isn't exactly hot. We'll get through it.
