4 way slip on wedge for my 35 ton Huskee

Did a search but didn’t find much on the 4 way wedge topic. I think one or two folks said they tried it but didn’t like it Mostly split red and white oak, some hickory or pecan and cherry with some poplar on occasion. I split a little smaller than most because DW doesn’t like working with larger splits. She helps with stacking so it’s in my best interest to keep her happy on this subject

What say ya’ll? My splitter does not have the fastest cycle time and looking to get more done with fewer “strokes”, without modifying or changing the pump. Any and all suggestions are most welcome!

4 ways really only work well with rounds in "the Goldilocks zone" size wise... IMO

 

That’s where one would be nice. Piece too big, pull it off, bust it in half, 4way back on. Can you remember of any manufacturer that makes one?

 

I see these on eBay that claim to fit multiple brands/models...and I've seen other ones before too

I have often pondered a 3- way or T slip on for my Split-Fire 3265. The next bigger Split-Fire has a removable 4-way. In a number of videos, the 4-way doesn't always break the round completely and twists & jams it almost vertical. Would a 3- way, with the horizontal wings being fairly long left & right, but narrower than the vertical knife leave a big top split & two smaller splits below, work? The top split and the offside split would be pushed over to the log lift, while the near piece could be resplit on the return stroke. I'd want the horizontal wings to be at least 6" above the bed, so resplitting could done without removing the 3-way.

 

Putting back out there for any other opinions before I purchase one and realize it’s best use is as a boat anchor?

 

Lefty, former firewood partner now passed away, picked one up for our 35-ton many moons ago. He said it did not work and regretted buying it. Funny thing is, I do not remember ever seeing it so maybe that gives you a clue so you may want to save your money.

I happened to see one (4way wedge) sitting on a yellow and black splitter at a Menards store a little while back. It was a slip on type with one “keeper” bolt. It really looked like it would fit on my splitter and if I could find it available for purchase separately I’d probably risk $30-$50 to give it a try. I think it was sitting on a champion splitter.
I don’t think they are probably the magic pill for doubling production. But like The Wood Wolverine said use it on the Goldilocks stuff and then slip it off for his crotchety green elm that he is so fond of.

 

Ok……. A quick internet search shows I probably ain’t gettin one for $30-$50. Least wise, not a new one.

 

I’ve done a cursory internet search and looks like they can be had for $70-$100 plus/minus. Might scour FB Marketplace too and see if I can source a bargain. Hard to know if it will fit my wedge though is the big question.

 

I often thought about getting a 4-way wedge for my old 27-ton beam splitter but never did. I have both a 4-way and a 6-way slip-on wedge for my 35-ton splitter but have yet to use either as I am so used to just splitting with the single wedge and being able to 'shape' my splits. I intend to experiment with the 4-way wedge this spring but see little use for the 6-way. One advantage I have over the typical beam-type splitter is that I can hydraulicly adjust the position of the 4 or 6-way wedge which makes it more useful than one that is in a fixed position.

Not my picture but the same splitter. The silver vertical rod that the wedge is pinned to can be hydraulicly adjusted to position the wedge depending on the size of the round being split.

 

Somewhere on the site there is a video of T.Jeff Veal using either a 4 or 6 way producing splits off blue Sampson like a pro!

 

Thats a valid point that I’ve considered. Without the adjustment feature that you have it could be a lot of changing out the 4 way. Would need to stage the size of rounds more efficiently. Perhaps that’s one reason that some folks no longer use them?

 

Only way to get a 3 way split, the wings would have to be flush with top of vertical wedge.

I've found the 4way on Blue Samson works best. The 6way needs perfect size wood to be efficient. The 4way needs about 8-10" dia rounds for single pass splitting. We usually wind up resplitting pieces.
We we used our 30ton County Line only, we just had single wedge, if a piece needed resplit and was the right size,we we would stack together and resplit. It has 11 sec cycle time. And we split a lot of wood with it.

Yes, exactly! I'd want them fairly high above the bed to be able to do resplits,as I mentioned, under without needing to remove the wings.
