Split the load today and stacked it all. Topped off a half cord rack and a third started. I put aside pretty splits for smoker bundles. Maybe 10% of the splits. Cutting another load very soon.
That apple is some pretty wood, bet it smells good. I see why some folks utnit in chunks, that's some twisted stuff.
Actually very little aroma. Few whiffs, but not like the other aromatic woods...sassafras, white oak etc. Yes some gnarly pieces. I try to clean them up when cutting so they will stack upon nice. You ever cut any apple?
No, only had a couple small trees in the yard quite a few years ago. Both have since departed this life...
I’m salivating over this apple wood score! One of my favorite woods for smoking meats. We have no apple orchards here, there are some in western NC but that would be quite a ways to go not to bring back at least a trailer full
It is great smoking wood. We've used it a couple times on the new smoker. My last couple scores were by luck. I traded some general cordage wood for a 1/4 cord of random length chunks from a customer of mine. What other woods do you use for smoking JD Guy? Ill trade you apple for pecan?
Use a good bit of hickory but it’s easy to overdo it if you get a little zealous with it! Since pecan and hickory are from the same family (IIRC) these are preferable. Oh, and use the Oaks too.
Load number five cut yesterday. Longer cut there than I have. Snow coming this weekend and I wont go and risk getting stuck. One potential mill log. 16" at the butt. Ill be going back again.
All my apple cuts have been in the cold except one in September and it was a wild grown tree. How is the stability of milled boards Jason? Need to weight and clamp to keep from warping?
Very very unstable, lol. Might need a hydraulic press to keep them flat. If you do it, get some cheap ratchet straps and put them every 4 feet, at your stickers. I only top weighed them with several cinder block. That did nothing and they twisted/warped/cupped like crazy. Oh, and every other week or so, check on the tightness of the straps.
Nice Brad! I had hoped to get out yesterday; just didn’t have the time. And now the snow rolled in and more tomorrow. Let’s be clear…I’m not against snow! Just may inhibit the cutting. But the truck is AWD and I have snow tires….
Yeah cant blame you. Snow makes it less than desirable to cut. With my tires and 2WD I wouldn't attempt with the slight hill there. I've been cutting the rows in back by the old water tower.
Split right off the truck this afternoon. Snow started when I was halfway through. Not quite a half cord. Some smalls to buck yet. Topped off a bag of splitter shards. Ill sell this as smoker wood too. Another load in the near future, yes, just prefer it dry if I go there.
