    Does anybody have a good app that identifies wood by the bark. I have picture this but it gives me wildly different results.

    First picture looks like young Norway maple but could be young hickory, second one is ash.

    First one looks like white walnut aka butternut. Lower BTU and dries fast. Post pics of splits to confirm.

    Looks like sycamore. Hard to hand split.

    Ash yes the others are lower BTU but dry fast.

    Remember the best firewood is dry firewood regardless of species. I chuckled when Backwoods Savage said this when I first joined FHC, and now its Bible to me and makes perfect sense.

    Apps are no replacement for knowledge which just takes time. As for ID on your own or here, bark, end grain, and fresh split pictures will get the best results.
