OK Wood Gods, whatcha think here? I got my thoughts after looking at it for 25 years, but now I'm rethinking it after seeing it cut. It's my neighbors tree, and I'll tell you this, it's a "dirty" tree and has berries! He hated it and at least I'm getting all the wood!
Ok, I wasn't gonna reveal it but my 2 choices were Mulberry OR HackBerry, I thought for years it was a hackberry tree. It just didn't seem to have the Mulberry fruit. But, I cut many hackberry trees and the cut wood color was not the same.
Mulberry…. Great smoking wood… light smoke not an overly powerful smoke… I love it on smoked cheese….
To me, that yellow color means either mulberry or black locust. The mulberry bark is even somewhat similar in look to black locust, but not nearly as rough. Mulberry is pretty rare here but that stack just jumped out at me (figuratively, of course).
I was hoping you'd see this Scotty! Not too many of these around in my area, I was wrong for 25+ years..
They're finishing it up now. I appreciate the Input. I don't see that much Mulberry here, I guess the trees don't like the sandy soils, but damm if Maples don't grow like crazy here...
Boy, I just cut up a few slices off of the base stump, that stuff is some HEAVY $#!T I know I'm older and fat, but good Lord.
Did anyone mention mulberry yet? They don’t grow all over but there are enough of them around south Jersey.
Mulberry is excellent firewood, but gotta watch out for the sparks...it'll throw sparks all over the place when you open the door to reload if there are some coals left! I've had em shoot all over the room before...you definitely want to have all the recommended clearance to combustibles met, n then some!
What is mulberry? As I watch Jeopardy! If you don't want it me and Eric will take it off your hands!!! Excellent firewood. Splits easily, dries in a year and gives a good snap, crackle and pop in the stove.
Cousin to Osage Orange or Hedge as some know it. Very rot resistant wood in addition to being great firewood.
