If this has been discussed, sorry, I didn't find it on a search. I saw a mention of a Wood Bullet axe (Buckin Billy Ray design, supposedly), so, I figured I'd better investigate. I was already thinking I probably won't be buying a $200+ axe another guy was yakking about and then this one... is $600! Sheesh, how can a price be justified? Do you think it can possibly be that much better than, say, a Fiskars x27? I am sure it is a fine axe but golly, that's a lot. I could kick myself because a couple of years ago, Walmart had x27 priced at some crazy good price. I think it was after the winter season. Like 19.95 or such. Might have been 24.95, I don't recall. I think I didn't buy because I already have one, lol. Plus, each of the heavier Fiskars, the splitting mauls. Sheesh, I should have bought the entire rack of x27, they're now $70. Bullet Axe... I'm not a BBR hater, but also not a fanboi. I was laughing about him learning that humboldts leave high stumps while working with a crew in VA or PA. Humboldt is a great cut, but isn't popular here because of the 8-10" of high dollar wood (several board feet) left behind. I watch some of his content but a lot of it is like... Stuart Smalley talking to the camera.
The guy sure looks at everything differently. He does have some things that hold merit, but hard for me to swallow the "message"
Well, it IS a 5 lb axe, so, not far from a maul. EDIT: And I guess by the design talk I saw, I would think it is actually a splitting axe, not just an axe. That hand-forged stuff is high. I note that a very high quality Swedish (Gransfors Bruk) hatchet, those things are expensive. A 'lifetime' tool they are sometimes called. Like, $200.
I think I would most likely forge my own for that price. People can charge what they want for their products, and everyone else gets to decide if they will pay it.
I guess I’m in the hater category too. He’s so hard for me to watch, too much of a showman. It’s all about the dramatics which makes me turn it off. Friends, next time watch him buck, he dogs in and starts looking around. My dislike multiplied when he supported/promoted the iron pony. Complete hack job of a saw “builder”. $600 for that axe.. must be a serious fanboi to buy one.
I like the guy, I like Liam Hoffman also. I love axes and love hand splitting. Axes like that though are waaaay out of my budget. If I spent that much on an axe I would have some serious splainin to do!
If you can cut through the filler (most of BBR's content) it's possible to glean a few really good gems from his videos. But that's the thing. I don't have nor do I want to spend 45 minutes watching a video just for the 2 minutes and 43 seconds of actually getting down to business. His square filing videos I found helpful... but which one? I can't remember, he made several. Maybe it was one of the YouTube shorts? I can hone in on those. A $600 axe though? Who would pony up that kind of dough and actually use it afterwards? It's a showpiece, a wall hanger. I'd rather find a genuine vintage axe at a yard sale for $20, already looking distressed and use that as a wall hanger. I sure don't want fancy engraving with another man's name on it either. But for a true BBR disciple I guess it's appealing.
