Does a good crown coat keep water from seeping in?

    Hello
This is a single flue 8”x8” block chimney with brick only on the outside top roof portion. It has a clay flue liner and a Selkerk Masonry Conversion Kit with a Stainless Steel liner going down to a P61 in the basement. The new stainless steel Buderus boiler flue is right behind it. It has a concrete crown with a few of cracks. Little if any water gets in but coming into winter sealing it up maybe a good idea?
    Has anyone else done this?

No mason/fire srack expert, but it looks like you dealt with it in a positive manner.

Only thing would be what was used for the new see-ment. I have no idea what to use/avoid.

    Looking good!

What product did you use to seal the crown? If there is any existing cracks use some clear silicone caulk for now. In the Spring chisel it off, set some forms and pour a new concrete crown. The design of that one is wrong as water flows off getting the bricks wet plus its feathered down to nothing which almost always cracks and separates from the top course of bricks.

Ill post some pics of crowns I've done to give you an idea. Just have to find them.

Another great product is called "Through the Roof"
CLEAN the surface well before use.

The stuff is clear and very sticky.....
IMHO it is far better than any silicone product....

Ive seen a lot worse than that so I wouldn't be too concerned about seepage if you cant address the problem right away.

A good water repellant (not sealer) applied in the warmer weather will help preserve the integrity of the masonry and lessen the affect of freeze thaw damage.

I am very familiar with Saver Systems products. I've been using their Chimneysaver waterproofing since 1997. I personally don't like the crowncoat as my brother had used it many times and didn't like it. Failed prematurely in his applications. I've always been a fan of chiseling off the old, setting a form and pouring a new crown, but that's just me. If it works and you are pleased that's great. Be sure to take pics and document the work. If it fails you'll probably only get replacement product.

Let me dig up those pics.

After. [IMG][IMG][IMG]I waterproofed it later in the Spring after concrete had cured and it was dry.

In your case if the crown is pretty solid, sealing the cracks and coating it should work fine.

We've used clear silicone caulk since the 1960's (when my father discovered chimney leaking on his own house) with excellent results.

    Hello Buzzsaw Brad
I would like to see your pics but they did not come thru on my iPhone. Did you click upload file?
    Anyway
The concrete cap seemed in pretty good shape with no leaks so this seemed like it would help keep the crown last longer by sealing it.
