Did a little tractor work for a friend Thursday morning...
He had a fence that caught fire and burned some sections. 20251120_094145.jpg He wanted the old posts and concrete pulled up...the Catawba grapple and L4802 were up to the task... 20251120_094120.jpg 20251120_094531.jpg
He is going to build a shed in this area, so we also used the Woodland Mills 24Pro stump grinder and cleaned up 4 stumps too. 20251120_111650.jpg

Yeah people here call them that, I also like calling them poverty sticks. Since you can cut them all day, make very little progress, and have not much to show for it. They will burn, and I’m not picky about firewood, so in the stacks they go.

Spent a couple hours this afternoon and finished chipping brush. Had errands and appointments this morning, so another day half wrecked. Need to get the saw back down there and start in on cutting some of the better trees. All of the exposed dirt is covered in wood chips now. I’ll get another picture of the trail without the tractor blocking it at some point. So far only found one small soft spot that has appeared, will lug some dirt to fill it in as well.

Thank you sir! Nice work with the fence posts, and stump grinding. How are you liking the stump grinder?

Man, I would love to have a 3-point stump grinder. I have over half a dozen large diameter oak stumps from the trees that were felled near the house last year. I need to get a job quote to see if it's more feasible to just but my own. Some of these companies can get over $400 per stump for large hardwood stumps. I'd have to rig up a camera to make it easier since I have a cab tractor.

I'm beginning to really like it, took a minute to get used to using it, never ran anything like it before.

Right now, Woodland Mills has free shipping in November. That unit is $2875 right now, shipping later is $199.
This is a Canadian company, offering 3 yr warranty.
The MechMaxx chinesium knockoff is $1299...

If I hadn't bought the new splitter, I'd be tempted. Will have to wait until next year if I get one (stumps will be buried in snow soon anyway so out of sight, out of mind).

I understand, we went to the Paul Bunyan Show this year. They had a 15% show discount going on, more than covered shipping cost. Our son has quite a few stumps on his 5 acres, we have some on our place, and another friend that we are cutting a lot of pines for will need stump work in the front yard...

Lot of work going on in that thread!

That's an option I'll have to look into as well and then compare the three price points (hiring/renting/owning).

Glad to hear it, it’s a very useful tool, it takes a bit to get used to. Finding the sweet spot for speed and depth makes a world of difference on amount of time for grinding a stump.

I found mine lightly used on Craigslist for $1500, it look brand new. I had to drive 4 hours to get it as well. There’s deals to be had, just have to keep an eye out.

Moved some wood to the boiler this AM. Didn't lose a piece.

I tried picking the pallets with the forks, but they were frozen to the ground and yard-saled all the firewood. Ended up having to stack it all by hand.

    Big old house............

    Two gigantic chimneys..............

Built back in the "pre-insulation days"?

Whenever I see a house with huge or multiple chimneys, I think "that must have been fun to heat"!!!

Gorgious view and beautiful house FlameStead!

The weather warmed up a bit into the 20's. I've gotten a bit more experience on it, less mistakes in winching, and moved a bit more wood. In my limited time today I dropped and took out three trees. I found I could pull one full tree at a time. They were 10"diameter and consisted of 2x 16ft logs and a 20ish ft top. It handled them just fine even with the snow. For the tractor things are working alright, I haven't tried monster logs but "so far so good". The Igland 2501 has been good, but the larger models like the Uniforest 35 with more storage for chokers and more cable would be real nice. The guard on it doubles as the stand and is a little small, and flex's some when pulling the winch cord at certain angles (the pull cord pulley is mounted to the guard, as seen in the first picture).

Tractor-mounted logging winches are great tools for us less-than-lumberjack folks. I broke down and bought one last fall. What a game-changer! It's so much safer to work with alone, which I usually am doing, and it tears up a lot less ground when I can pull all or most of the tree out at one time, instead of having to go get each individual log and weave them out one by one with the skidsteer. I always seem to tear up a lot of duff and understory and bang a lot of live trees with the longer logs, no matter how hard I try, with the skidsteer.
