So in years previous, the pellet offering at the HDs in my area (South East PA) have been Stove Chow or Green Supreme. Now this year, the stores near me have a American Wood Fibers hardwood offering instead. Has anyone tried them? They look like typical dark, smooth, shiny hardwood pellets. Interesting though that the bag is not the traditional AWF bag... In other words, it does not look like this:
These made a brief appearance up here in NE back in fall 2014; they were available at some TSC stores in Northeast CT and Central MA. At that time, they were in a different class (better) than chows and GS, especially with respect to ash output, if that matters to you. If you buy some, and the product is still relatively the same, think you will like them a lot. It's been some time (years) since these were discussed here on this forum, but I believe they were well liked by most who ever burned them. This is what the bags looked like back then (below). I just happen to be burning some AWF white pine softwoods now, and they do come in a bag that looks just like the picture you posted, only the softwood version (the bags are largely black instead of green). Those are fantastic as well.
Have burned many tons of the AWF hardwoods ( Green bags ) and they are your typical hardwood pellets, have also burned many tons of AWF softwoods ( black bags ) and they burn much cleaner then the hardwoods. Heat output is about the same with either pellet
ttdberg, yeah that white/blue bag is what I saw at the store. Prior to that, I've only ever seen the AWF in the green bags, and never saw AWF at the orange box store.. I'm gonna pick up a pallet and hope for the best. I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks guys!
Rich250, I've been burning the AWF pine for the past couple years and they're great. Unfortunately the place I got them has gone out of business and I can't get them there this season. If you're in Bucks Co, you can't be that far from me. Are you still finding the AWF pine for a good price? Shoot me a message if you can share your source?
I'm in Berks county and get my AWF softwoods at Ace hardware during the fall when they are cheaper (paid 329 a ton this year ) right now I think they are 369 a ton.
Oh sorry, I think I knew that. And now that I remember that, I think I know where that Ace HW is. Maybe an hour from me, so getting pellets from there to me is problematic. So I bought a ton of those AWF hardwoods from HD, I'll take a pic of the bags and let everyone know how they burn soon. I'm expecting them to be a typical hardwood.
Don't know how close Buck Pellets may be to you but they sell Easy Blaze yellow pine which burn very similar to AWF white pines

This is the new AWF hardwood bag next to a bag of the white pine I have left over from last season: The AWF name is not as prominently displayed, but here's a pic: And here's a pic of the pine and the new hardwood. Pine on the left, hardwood on the right. Not as much difference as other hardwoods I've messed with. Most hardwoods are much darker and shinier. These don't look that much different than the white pine. Let's hope they don't burn that much different either!
I've bought from Bucks Pellets before. They are closer to me than your Ace is. I think I'll give those Easy Blaze a try after I burn through these AWF hardwoods. Thanks.
