Just listened to a radio broadcast here in Wisconsin with author James Card. Seems like his book will go on my Christmas list. Sounds very interesting.

Turned out to be a real nice day today. 31F and not many clouds in the sky. We got a foot of snow yesterday.

This chainsaw book is amazing. He writes of Joseph Cox who patented the modern saw chain. Cox designed his “rakers” after studying pine sawyer beetles with a magnifying glass leaving trails of chips rather than sawdust in their wake. Rakers were the crux of his design and still are today. He stole his idea from a bug!

I find this stuff fascinating and can’t put the book down.

One of my new fBook customers called me last night. The guy who couldn’t back up the trailer to save his arse?
He gave me a compliment and wants me reserve him 5 face cords for next fall.

“My wife says your oak does not bubble steam out the ends like the wood you bought last year”

I guess my moisture meter is still accurate. The wood he bought from me was closer to 15 than 20 according to my meter.

“the chainsaw is a conduit for meaningful work”

Best line in this chainsaw book. I am going to send off to a FHC friend and I hope he sends it off when he is done.
    Let’s keep it traveling!

We lit off my two ash trees that had died. I had deposited them in the cemetery burn pile across from our house. They lit off real good.

Someone might ask “why has a man lift been parked in your yard since Dec 3rd?”

    IMG_3985.jpeg

It’s my Amish buddy’s. He is going to chop about 6 limbs off my monster yard walnut tree. When he finds the time. He’s done it before and that old girl needs another haircut.

    IMG_3986.jpeg

She is a big girl. Just over 36” on the DBH tape and just under 36” DBH on the Biltmore stick.

    IMG_3984.jpeg

    IMG_3987.jpeg

The old girl is firewood only. When we bought this property in 1995 a woven wire fence went right through the middle of it. The fence is long gone but the first 4 feet of her I’m sure is full of metal.

There were about 20 turkeys in the field when I took the second pic. Squint you might see some of them,,,,
