Have looked at this big hickory through my back windows for 20 plus years, always looked healthy Then in recent high winds it suddenly snapped like 30 feet up. Decay at that height but very little above or below that point. Got about 75% out of woods thus far. You can see close up of split area in last photo
P.S. I didn’t cut it with the top handle, but I already put away the bigger saws! Just left it there for scale.
There is a monster hickory in the woods at work, it had a huge limb break off, looked much the same. This limb is probably 16" diameter by the trunk where it broke.
Top Shelf wood. I have a dead mockernut hickory (smaller than this one) that needs to come down soon. I always save some for the meat smoker.
Still amazes me how those hickories shatter like that. Just something I wouldn’t expect. The first shag I ever sunk a saw into. I had a wagon load of splinters 5-6 feet long. It took one heck of a hit from that big old oak tree.
I guess trees are like chains. As strong as the weakest link. Glad itll become great firewood. Do you use higher BTU woods during colder times in the OWB or just whatever is next in the stacks?
I sort of just go to next part of lean to. But in shoulder season, I fill my .8 cord farm wagon with whatever junk I have at hand. Right now I’ve run mainly on tree of heaven since start up
And I am taking one good log to a band saw mill nearby just because I wanted to try it out for some woodworking projects would make great handles for nearly anything
