1) Front and center, I made the island cutting board from ash that I milled from one of the dead trees that I had removed after I moved here 5 years ago. It replaced a tired Formica top. 2) Top center. The ceiling panel was made of cedar fence boards to cover an area where there was a faux stained glass "skylight". 3) I brought back the chandelier from a trip to California in '21 to exchange some items with my ex that had been moved here by the movers accidentally, pick up some that missed the move, and traded a chandelier from my stairway for this one that hung in her (our former) dining room. 4) The wife of the couple I bought the house from is short. There was a microwave cubby that hung down below the cabinet bottoms where the wine rack is. I removed the cubby and made the mine rack to fit the hole. St the same time I removed 2 appliance garages to facilitate replacing the old Formica counter with the new Swanstone one. The wine rack project was triggered by the old microwave failing. 5) Because I didn't have a microwave, I replaced the range hood with a half height microwave. (it still has a full size cavity.) Bonus project: The fridge is out of frame to the left of the stove. When I had the new flooring installed, the fridge was a quarter inch too tall to fit under the wall cabinet. While the installer worked, I took the cabinet off the wall, ran the the cabinet through the table saw to shorten it, restained the cut edges, and rehung it, all in about a half hour. The stone veneer backsplash was my idea, but I paid a mason to do it. It matches the stone I had him install around the fireplace a few months earlier. But that's another project... The couple that sold me the house live next door, and have a Christmas Tree farm next to my property. It's like living in a Hallmark movie, especially when it snows,
Ooops... I spied one more small project in the photo. In the back left corner of the counter id s vertical paper towel holder. I made that out of an ash round stained to match the cabinets, and copper pipe and fittings, and a floor flange. There's also a matching towel bar out of sight on the far side of the island. The cabinets and drawers all had white porcelain knobs which I replaced with antique copper knobs and cup pulls.
SLOweather I really like wood cabinets and all the counter space you have there. My cabinets are lighter in colour and badly need to be refinished.
I agree, very nice! One question that came to my mind on the cabinet above the fridge, is it the type that has a gap behind it so the heat from the compressor can escape? If not, fridge might not work too well...just a thought.
