Mystree Splits

I was assembling bundles today and came across these. Only a few and not sure what they are. Heavier, but not oak. Sorta looks like BL, but not. Tannish heartwood with some sapsucker damage. Im guessing Chinese chestnut??? Calling my tree ID guys.

Swamp mahogany?

 

Does it have a strong spicy smell? It looks a lot like sassafrass to me, but the smell usually gives that away.

 

I had the same feeling. I’ve seen very few trees that have that cinnamon bark color and Brad is familiar with Sassafras. It’s not Sourwood.

 

I've got nothing Brad. The Chinese chestnut I've worked with and made firewood from wasn't heavy/dense when dry and the inner bark didn't have that red inner bark color.

 

Eastern redbud has that reddish-brown inner bark. According to Google, sapsuckers will attack them too. I've never gotten any eastern redbud before.

 

I would've bet good money the wood pictured is cherry. IIRC Chinese chestnut has pith to it.

 

Its not sassy. As Chud stated I'm very familiar with it.

Bark looks like Pine, wood looks like Oak, I’d say you found a Poak. Do trees celebrate Halloween?

 

Looks kind of like a big Austrian/Oregon/Ponderosa pine maybe. I cut a similar looking softwood a few years back but never could figure out what it was.

 

I would have said sassy. Thats off the table. How about a dawn redwood?

 

A red gum might look similar to that.. but that’s so dense termites can eat it so probably not that. It’s in eucalyptus family

 

I fertilized a pine with Viagra once. Now its an oak!

 

Im never going in the woods with you again Wouldnt Pine and Viagra make a Vine? So what does the bark look like, a little more veiny than normal? LOL

 

I may get in trouble for this!
