I was processing some Elm logs and they were going thru the 6 way wedge just fine. I thought these rounds were elm too... They were not. The Elm split like a dream compared to this Gum nightmare. Some of these splits are bigger than most people like, but I'm just burning in an owb.
Nice splitter. That must be fun to play with. Just think, the happiest you’ll ever be with that Gum is when it’s all ash. LOL
That sound you hear is jrider cringing! Its my belief its called gum so log splitters can chew on it. Last Winter the guy I cut PT for hired a wood processer. The only log it couldn't split was black gum. Even his log splitter grunted when it was split. Miserable stuff.
Garbage! I have little to no patience for that. Guess I’m spoiled with the area I live in offering so much premium hardwoods.
As long as its properly dried. Not known for its heat out put, not commonly pursued for firewood, but burns better than snowballs.
It burns about as hot at willow, or sumac (Tree of Heaven). In other words, not good at all. If I would have known it was Gum I would have thrown it away, or noodled it, if I was feeling rambunctious. It wasn't until half way thru filming I realized it was Gum.
I just realized after watching that video again, I had some gum a couple years ago...there was a few rounds mixed in with some wood I got from my old boss... definitely split different than anything I had come across before! Pretty sure I already cremated that wood...don't recall how it burnt.
