So I wouldn't highjack another thread, I thought I'd start another!

Woodwidow's mother is affectionately known in our family as Granny and she is a wood burner even at her young age of 89.

    100_0924.JPG

In the room next to her furnace, she has a wood splitter for making kindling.

    Some of her future heat!

To get to Granny's, one has to take a Ferry boat ride.

One of the local coffee shops is in this hotel. @bigbarf48 This is where the wood splitting pool took place!

    Many neat older type houses.

The Islanders get their firewood in an unique way. They tie their wood up as it floats by.
Firewood is very sacred in this town. To cut up a log that is tied up and not yours, a person is regarded just like a Horse Thief in the Old West!

I'll let the pictures do the talking.

You folks live in such a unique area. I really enjoy the pictures that you share. Amazing that Granny is able to enjoy her wood fires as well.

That was interesting Allan. I just need to clear up one thing, is the wood they collect on the island loose logs from drives on the main waterway? Some of the pics show cut logs that are clean and straight.

All the logs are escaped logs from log tows or tows that have broke up in heavy weather .

Log booms have to be towed in calm weather .

    Way ahead!
Woodwidow's Dad had made five different covered areas to store firewood. IMGP3670.JPG
    Behind the garage.
    IMGP3676.JPG
Off the ground for good air circulation.
    IMGP3677.JPG
    IMGP3679.JPG
    Beside the garage.
    IMGP3682.JPG
I made this one a little larger and on pallets.
    100_1377.JPG
Granny burns about 5 to 6 cords per year. The best wood that I can get for her is Hemlock but it takes 2 years under cover to dry. Hemlock when dry puts off very little creosote as it is a wood very low in resins.
    100_0937.JPG
Can get another 5 cords into the room next to the furnace so by the time she burns this wood, it won't register on the moisture meter.
I think we should make Granny our first Honorary Member!

I think we should all go visit granny.

Looks nice! Does she lasso her own logs, or is it donated to her?

Talk about firewood stashes, as I was going through the pictures I was waiting to see the splits stacked around the toilet and under the kitchen table :)

No lasso. I won't let her burn beach wood.
I've pretty much have kept Her in firewood since they started burning firewood in 1975. Up until the death of my father in-law in 1994, he used to come over and give Woodwidow and myself a helping hand getting the wood. Back in those days I had a 5 ton flatdeck and could bring 5 cords at a time. A side note - their first wood furnace lasted 35 years by not burning beach wood. I should do a post on this.

This is a thread that I did earlier this year on a firewood day to Alert Bay.
