Fire starter A simple thing to use to start a fire. They can be either made or bought. They can be made using dryer lint and wax in egg cartons or use wood shavings instead of dryer lint.

According to several online sources its supposed to be the same as a face cord. 8 foot x 4 foot x 16 inches.

In Ohio they say it's not an "official" definition, because it's never been properly/legally defined...they say firewood must be sold in quantities defined by a cord...or fractions of a cord.

"Cant" (no apostrophe) - a length of log intended to be bucked into firewood billets.

"Felling" - the action of dropping a standing piece of timber or standing tree.

"Notch" (also know as "Face") - wedge of wood cut out of a tree making a void that serves as the collapse point for the tree during the felling operation.

Whats the name for the wood removed from the notch during felling? Not a quiz. I have no idea if it has a slang or specific name beyond the notch wood. Lol

Weve always called it the face wedge or just wedge......not sure if that's what it's known as or not.....good question.

I recently learned that the stump shot is that flat shelf of the back cut that helps keep the trunk from kicking back off the stump.

"Traditional face"- when the angled cut of the face is above the flat plane cut.

"Humboldt face"- when the angled cut of the face is below the flat plane cut.

The Humboldt is the cut of choice for many fellers out west (I use it almost exclusively also for both felling and for cutting tops and big vertical leads out of trees) because it keeps the log, top or lead from being able to shoot off of the stump cut towards the back and also helps jut the felled tree out and away from the stump in the felling direction.

Humboldt leaves too much money on the stump for loggers in the east. Humboldt allows the guys in the mountains to stand right by the stump as she goes over (they got nowhere to run). Easterners leg it. lol

I would have agreed, until I put some time on the "waltsplittah"...I am a "tabletop/vertical splitter" convert now...still prefer a horizontal if using a traditional splitter though. (unless busting up a couple bigguns...then vertical for a few minutes is fine :D)
