I modified the old single wall stove pipe to fit. I had to order 2 pieces for the double wall installation and they won't be in until next monday.

Congrats on the stove! I really like the Maple Leaf design.

Very pretty hearth. You are going to be in for a surprise with the heat that baby will throw.

    Enjoy!

We need "heat-o-vision" capability so we can feel the heat.

    I like that, "hea-to-vision".
The first burn was so nice, I put a small amount of shoulder wood in and burned the load slow and easy, I went by the paint curing guielines that came with the stove. Part way through the 'bells' went off and my wife came and let me know the 'stove alarm' was going off. I went back and looked at Lorins post on why that happens, nothing to worry about, part of the learning curve as I see it.

After 2.5 hrs I had a few coals still going strong after the first load, this time I loaded the stove up with some shoulder wood again, filled the box. The next part was awesome to see. I closed the door and opened the air damper all the way and watched, the fire makes it's way to the back of the firebox and rolls to the top, the flames shoot up towards the top plate. The stove pipe got to 300 deg quickly and I opened the bypass and engaged the cat. I shut the air down to 1/3 and watched again, this time the upper splits in the box stayed lit and the lower splits kind of glowed. This will be the last burn for the paint curing process. I know some of the guys have complained the curing paint smell was bad, I didn't really mind it so much.

The first pic is the flames rolling off the top splits. The second pic shows the flue temp. This is some awesome chit!

Right now I'm into the second load for about 30 mins so far. The cat is engaged and I have the air damper at 1/3 and only the top splits are lit. I'm thinking this load may go well into the night as I have it set now.

Thanks for the kind words Hippie. Looking forward to an awesome heating season. Today was day 1 of the learning curve, and with the help of the beta testers I'll have this down in no time.

After 40 minutes with the air damper set at 1/3 I had to knock it down to less than 1/4. The stove room got to be 76 deg and the flue temp was 450 deg. It's amazing how quickly the air damper affects the fire on this stove, the fire changes it's profile in less than 20 seconds.

Our damper control was initially jostled out of position from shipping during our first burn. Once we got it settled into the right place and then adjusted the air it was a "Oh, wow" moment. You have hours and hours of entertainment ahead!

BrianK , have you thought about how you will watch your flue temps with double wall stove pipe yet?

I wonder how many splits you will go through in 24 hours with that slow burn you have going?

Thats a good question. Since the burns I'm doing today are primarily for curing the paint they are also taking the chill out of the house, been raining here for 2 days now. I just choked the air down all the way so I'll see where it takes me when I see it in the morning.

I used double wall pipe all last season with the Beta IS. I use a Bacharach Tempoint flue probe thermometer for the double wall stove pipe that was strongly recommended by forum member Charlie (RIP) here: http://firewoodhoardersclub.com/for...re-meter-and-temp-gage-probe.1390/#post-28368

It's a bit more $$ than other options but in my opinion it was money very wisely spent.

Appreciate the help on that. Since I'm spending what seems like 3x the amount of what single wall flue pipe costs vs. the double wall, I might as well get a good probe therm.

I've never regretted spending extra money on good tools or equipment. I have regretted trying to save a buck trying to get by with cheap stuff.

This Bacharach thermometer is definitely worth an extra buck or two. My dad used them as a mechanical contractor in HVAC many years ago and when I told him I was getting one for the stove pipe he said it was worth it.

I agree with you 100% on spending good money on the right things. Word of mouth and good research is what I usually depend on and it hasn't really let me down.

I'm sitting in the stove room right now as I type. I'm looking through the IS window and the way I stacked the splits hours ago is still in place, amazing. Stove top is 450 and the pipe is reading 275 and this is choked down all the way.
