In my previous thread I said how Im behind and have been slacking in my hoarding duties. I was thinking of buying a triaxle of logs. Then today my dad called and asked if I wanted firewood. His neighbor told him his daughter had some she wanted gone. I got 2 small logs from the neighbor before, so he knows I'm a hoarder.

I was kind of reluctant because the last score my dad told me about kind of sucked. I was cutting on a 50° bank along the road. But I said sure. I called her and she said she had trees cut down and thought it was oak. I asked if they were logs. She said no, they just needed to be split and I could back right up to the pile. She thought about 3 pickup truck loads (tahoe loads for me).
I was going to start moving it Saturday but I had some time today after work and figured I should see what I was getting into. Its just over 20 minutes away.

I was able to back right up to the pile. Some wonky lengths, but I figured as much. The larger rounds are heavy! I'll have to halve those bad boys, or I'll give myself a blow out. Im thinking just a little over a cord but hard to tell with it being spread out so much.

    First load up...

When I talked to her she said she had some other stuff off in the woods too. Maybe I'll be interested. She wasn't home when I was there, but I saw this off in the woods.

It's some decent size wood. My guess is the large stuff is over 3' in diameter. A bunch of 6-10" diameter rounds mixed in there too. I hope to see her tomorrow and if that's the "stuff" in the woods, he$$ to the yeah I want it. I might need a trailer for those rounds though

Thanks dad! You did good on this one.:)

Some decent wood there. Not fun schlepping rounds but it is what it is. Dad done good!

I hate when I get a wood referral and the wood isn't great (I'm a wood snob, I'll admit it) Kinda feel obligated to take it.

Finished up moving the rounds home.
Some ugly and heavy pieces. Pretty sure I won't be able to hand split those.

Talked with home owner and she said I can take whatever I want, when I can. Whatever I don't want, she'll let rot in the woods.

Too bad they cut this oak. Would have been a great log to mill. I told her I'm going to need to cut down these sections because of the weight. She said, "they're that heavy?" Madam, you have no idea.

Large rounds smell like whiskey to me.
The leaf pic was attached to the rounds I moved home. All kinds of oak leaves in the woods around the large stuff.

I saw 3 different types of oak leaves in the woods where the large rounds were. The deep bark makes me think those are chestnut oak. I really didn't look at the smaller rounds too hard. Not sure what they are. When I go back, I'll do some investigation.

Yup chestnut oak. My favorite oak small and the one oak I'll take by choice. Fairly common around here, I just don't score it that often.
