I checked on a valve adjusting kit at the dealer for my HT131. It was $16. Does this price sound right? I found a valve cover gasket less $5 and read that the feeler gauge is $2. I can't see what would make the kit so expensive.
Not intendung to start a brand bashing session here but, Stihl, is the cause of the high cost. Spare parts/tool prices set abnormally high to protect servicing dealers. Nothing wrong with that, it is just how they (Stihl) and some dealers do buisness. I have read where the Germans complain about it.
I'm not sure what the kit is but all I use is the Stihl feeler gauge and reuse the gasket. I haven't had a problem yet.
And this guy services a lot of 4-mix Stihl engines.. I've seen his shop A few times. Just gonna buy the feeler gauge, based on his recommendation.
You could be right. The kit is a valve cover gasket, washer, feeler gauge, and I think a screwdriver. To temporarily adjust them I used a .005'' gauge (smallest I had) cut down to work. At least now they are better than they were. I reused the old gasket. I'm gonna get the correct feeler gauge once I can locate one. I called one dealer and the guy said they don't sell tools and wanted to hook me up with the service department so I said no thanks. I called another dealer and their parts guy was out and the guy that was filling in did not know what gauge to order. I was going to call back with the part number for the feeler gauge but they were about to close. I guess from now on I need to have my part numbers with me when I call or go to the dealer. After I get the feeler gauge I'm going to check the leaf blower too.
What is with the feeler gauge, is it metric? If so, you can get metric shim stock from any of the commercial hardware suppliers, and make a pile of them. Or check with a motorcycle shop for a set. Here is the whole set on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ELORA-188-2...1054033017&pt=Motors_Automotive_Tools&vxp=mtr
I was thinking about shim stock too. I didn't have any. It would probably cost as much as the feeler gauge. I'm gonna call this dealer here in a little bit to order it. The gauge needs to be 1mm or .004." Here is the kit you can see why the gauge is special.http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-STIHL-VALVE-SERVICE-KIT-FITS-FS90-FS100-FS110-BR500-BR550-BR600-4-MIX-UNITS-/390677850262?nma=true&si=dnblkossn5alQggv87LU05yoNmI%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557
DMS62 is Dwayne's Mower Service, I deal with him all the time, really good guy. I would just buy the kit from him. His prices are good and he ships very quickly!
I'll keep that in mind for when I need something else. I called the dealer with the part number and ordered 2 feeler gauges. They were $.25 each. I'll post the part number when I get it and make sure it is right.
I would say this is the kit. The feeler gauge has s narrow tip to fit under rocker arm. Other than that it's nothing new. I'm so glad I have a good dealer. I went in the store one day and he gave me three out of a bag of about 20. I updated my stupid iPhone to 8.0.2 and now I can't upload pictures. Stupid technology.
Once the upload box appears, lock the phone and then unlock it and you should be able to continue normally.
I got the feeler gauges yesterday. Here is the part number 4180-893-6400. Here is what one looks like.
There are valves to adjust? I have a Combi 130 that is 4 mix. I've never done anything to it other than use it.
'lil baby valves. Like, seriously itty bitty. But I have seen smaller in model airplane motors. They used to recommend adjusting them after 10 hours then 139 hours thereafter. Has that changed?
The push rods are really small too. The manual for my BR600 says 139 hours. I bought HT131 second hand. I downloaded a manual and it says 139 hours too. Neither mention 10 hours. I don't know how much the HT 131 has been used, the engine looks like new but the valve were probably .010.'' I'm gonna check the BR600 next and see what it is like. It has not had a whole lot of use, maybe 30-40 hours.
