I threw a number at them and they agreed. I think it was $80 round trip. I used to go by the mile sort of the way you do, but now I'll check distance and travel time then quote. Within five miles is free.
Put a little weight in the bed to hold it down and even 2wd should be fine. I’d get a couple nylon straps and have at it. Not a “tow strap” most of those are designed to stretch and store energy. That’s not something you want for your application. Shoukd t take long to figure out what the machine is capable of pulling off that trailer at the same time.
I was out of cherry here and brought in a couple heaping wheelbarrows full yesterday. Split off the bark with my little electric splitter. Ill bundle them up today. Note my bundle jig filled to the right of the splitter. Smoking some chicken with cherry today too. Made a new bench top for the splitter table kinda by accident. I goofed building something for a job and didn't want to throw it away.
Twelve cherry bundles done today. I noticed some of them seemed heavier so I'll set these aside for a month or two to dry more. For some reason I had split them slightly bigger than normal and the stack gets zero sunlight. I have drier barkless splits at bundle storage I'll bring in this week. No other inquiries or sales. How were sales this weekend Gary? Anyone buying everything in the stand in the rain?
I have pretty aggressive tires on the rear. The trailer floor is pretty smooth. I'm hopeful that the ones on the bottom will come out without much difficulty. It's the ones higher in the pile that I'm more concerned about. I'm thinking about asking to put the largest diameter logs crossways on the trailer floor and toss everything else on top. The smaller stuff is easy to get off.
Sales were "normal," definitely slower than the previous couple weeks. I ended up selling 10 regular bundles and 6 minis, 2 2'x2' loose stacks and a 2'x4' stack, 1/2 rack of blue spruce and 2 fire starters. I had a couple people reach out for bulk orders which I politely declined. I may pursue those this winter when I have a little more time and fewer roadside stand sales.
One of my BL customers offered it to me for $50. How could I say no. Handy little thing for resizing splits. On the slow side but I'm not usually in a hurry. My bundle splits are roughly 2/3 the size of general cordage splits. I usually tinker with smoker wood while the smoker is going. I mean the fire and temp and she does the prep/cooking.
My "new" customer (he runs the store that was my original account and just opened this one) got his 60 bundle order plus delivery Saturday. I built a 4x8 rack out of 2x4's there and got paid for that too. Forgot to take pics
Sounds good. The reason I suggested the weight in the gator is the hitch is low and the trailer high. The more you pull the more it will try to lift the wheels off the ground. Weight is traction.
My smoker wood is nowhere near my smoking wood inventory. That might be a good thing! I'd probably have nothing left to sell...
You're absolutely right. The Gator hitch is REALLY low. If it doesn't have the guts to move the logs, I may have to use my truck.
I use the ugly scraps and splitter scraps when possible. I have a stack of apple "shorts"...splits that are 12-14 long (not my cutting) and I'm thinking of using the collection of cat litter boxes I have. Thinking 11-12" to fit the boxes. The cut offs will be for my use. I ended up using bark on hickory pieces for my smoking session Saturday.
Yesterdays 40 bundle delivery to one of the local regulars. One other local (of three) needs more very soon and the other is getting low.
Cool. No parking for your wood. With bundles and smoking woods going out the door, will you try to not take on new multi-cord customers, if not pare down the current list? Bundles /smoke wood is more profitable, right? Maybe in a year's time, you'll have a better idea of redirecting your energy.
I try not to have a lot of volume customers. They come and go and I've been trying to sell fresh cut splits in the off season rather than buy as they need dry half cords. Yes good profit in smoker bundles but sales are not the same as wholesale bundles. Im approaching 200 bundles for smoker wood and around 1400 for the other. As long as I can keep generating inventory I'll keep going. With the coming Winter ill see how the wholesale bundles go keeping up. Im set for my volume customers unless its a brutal Winter. I could always raid you inventory for some nice dry oak. One of my regulars likes a cord of such.
