My 462 has started running badly, and got to where it wouldn't run at all unless it was cooled down, but even then it will only start and run for maybe 30 seconds or so, and won't idle, just dies after that. I was sawing fine with it, until it just started running badly. So, then I eventually took it to a place recommended, and early on they told me it had a scored cylinder and wanted to fix that, but that was going to cost around $400, Ok, maybe that's a problem, but I told them before we did that, I want it running better. I figured it needed a fuel filter at least, and I had replaced the spark plug but I told them I didn't check the gap when I replaced it.

Anyway, the fuel filter was plugged up pretty bad, and they gapped the sparkplug, and checked to see if anything else was plugged up. Now it runs good and saws good and strong, but won't idle. They don't seem to know what else to do. I told them that I thought it probably needed some of those electronic parts replaced, but they seemed ignorant on that. I told me I could pick it up, if I didn't want the cylinder and piston replace but he agreed it was running strong, and the scored cylinder was probably not the running issue. They said they ran diagnostics on it but I don't think they know what they are doing. So, I am probably going to pick the saw up tomorrow and take it somewhere else.

I figure it's some of the electronic parts that regulate the idle, but I am not smart enough to tell them what to do. And they apparently don't know either. I don't think it's a gas issue, because I have been running 2 or 3 other saws on the same gas and I am careful about my gas mix.

Could someone here, give me some suggestions, as to what the problem might be?

If you are comfortable to do it; pull the muffler off and look at the condition of the piston right there at the exhaust. It will look rough and grooved if it’s been run lean and had aluminum transfer. Post pics if that would help.

They give you any compression readings?

Ok, I may be able to do that when I get the saw back, but could that be the issue with it not wanting to idle, at this point?

No, they did not. But they said they did saw with it, and it sawed strong, and had plenty of power at this point, just won't idle.

I honestly don't know a whole lot about the 'lectric carbs. Something plugged on the low circuit side maybe? It should compensate, but may not be able to overcome? Are you able to manually choke the saw? See if it will idle at half choke? That'd let you know that you are not getting enough fuel through at idle.

Installing a new Mtronic solenoid is very easy to do. Just don't touch the parts below the O-ring according to what I've read.

Doesn't want to run when hot is a classic ignition coil issue right?

Compression can be checked by tugging on the recoil starter cord.

It runs he said. And cuts strong. Just won't idle.

I would confirm whether or not the pc is scored. If it’s down on compression the computer can’t tune the saw. If the piston and cylinder is scored replacing mtronic parts is useless.
Because the dealer says it cuts strong doesn’t mean it’s true, or that the piston and cylinder is scorched.

Seeing is believing. Pull the muffler.

Like the others mentioned, pull the muffler cover and look for vertical lines on the piston or dark black carbon built-up around the rings. If it all looks shiny and silver, buy an mtronic service kit. It includes a new orange fuel filter and fuel solenoid. The kit is cheaper than buying the solenoid alone. It’s about a half hour job and you only need a few tools to do it

I guess I should ask first, does the recoil badge say 462C or 462?

Can you turn the idle speed up and see what point it doesn’t idle?

If the cylinder is really scored, bad enough to lower compression to a critical point, it would be hard to start, low power, and probably not idle...from what I read you only have one of those, so it's very unlikely that any scoring is bad enough to be the culprit.
I'd lean strongly toward fuel delivery issues myself...

Definitely need to know if it’s a 462c “mtronic” or the standard carb model. I am assuming it’s mtronic and I would definitely do the solenoid like others have suggested already. Not sure if all 462’s had a white solenoid or if some of the older ones had a black one. If it’s white replace white for white if it’s black use green one.

It's a 462CM, I am pretty sure. This saw does not have a choke unlike my older style 461.

I am going to go pick it up, this morning. They called me this morning and said they had it running. I don't won't know if they really have it fixed or not until I check it out.

Could hav me been as simple as a field reset after the new fuel filter and cleaning the air filter to fix the idling issues. Or if required the solenoid 15-20 min change out and a 1-1/2 to 2 min field reset. Also good idea to change the orange fuel filter once a year only cost 5-6$
