I picked up some wood at the tree dump today and I'm not quite sure what it is. My wild hair guess is that its Black Birch.

Did it smell minty? That looks like BB to me.

Not Black Birch. More like cherry or some other ornamental fruit tree.

You have 2 different kinds of wood there. Ornamental and young black cherry look a lot like black birch - aka "cherry birch". The leaves on BB are serrated, while BC is smooth. But the smell should be a dead giveaway. Black birch has a "wintergreen" smell to it - it's my #1 favorite wood to split. Smells great burning too. Pretty sure I see cherry leaves in the pic though. No clue on the second kind.

LOVE the trunk load!!! Not sure why you didn't fill up the back seat too???

Yeah, that's Ash and its not the wood in question. I got about three different kinds of wood today. Ash and locust are also present in the trunk.

    Ok, that was interesting.
I have been cutting choke cherry lately and this stuff is definitely not that. It has bright peach/orange heart wood. The choke cherry had dark red heart to it. That is why it threw me off.
The cherry birch makes sense to me. It has a bark that reminds me of birch, but it doesn't smell like it or even totally look like it. It didn't strike me as cherry that I was aware of though and it didn't have any fruit with it in the pile.
    Thanks everyone.

I'm not seeing black cherry in the bark. Its not plated at all.

The tops of my black cherry look just like that, but my id skills aren't too impressive. I have one on the ground now that I've been working on, I'll try and get a pic tomorrow to compare.

The bark doesn't get the "burnt cornflakes" thing until it's a little more mature. Actually if you inspect the burnt cornflakes closely, you'll see the "birch-y" horizontal lenticels running through it, like those have. The ratio of heartwood to sapwood looks about right for cherry.

I'm certainly not trying to call you a liar. I dont have any known black cherry around, so I'm relying on internet searches to get the pics. You know how reliable that can be.
If you have pics, I would like to see them for comparison sake.

It might be because I'm dealing with a very tired 5 year old and am a bit tired myself, but I feel like I should just apologize for suggesting that it could be something else. :zip: For the record, I dont care, its neat either way.
Man, I need to get some rest.

One of the things that drew me to this wood is the bright heart wood. I get a kick out of all the bright yellow of the Mulberry and the reds and (apparently) oranges of cherry and chocolate of Walnut. Its pretty darn cool.

That heartwood looks like the same color as the cherry I have around here. I'm pretty sure that's cherry. Split some and post pics. Give it a smell too

Cherry, I've got a crap ton of it around here. Giant weed, grows fast, seasons fast & burns good. Great smell in the stove too. Cut all you can.
