Friend of mine is in NE Wisconsin cutting some wood for his mother and asked me if I knew what it was. He’s in Marinette county. Looks a little walnutty to me but he says there’s basically no odor and it is splitting a little difficult and tends to be stringy. IMG_2164.png

It does resemble cottonwood, but with no putrid odor I'm going with ash of the green variety. The color of the inner bark where it was stripped from the ridges definitely has an ash look.

My first thought was ash but at second look I haven't seen any with bark that blocky. I've not cut green though.

Green Ash, huh? Bark definitely looks a bit different than the ash Im accustomed to here. I’ll let him know. Ash will usually split fairly easy but I’ve certainly had some that didnt!! There are always exceptions and outliers with this stuff! Thanks guys!

Id say green ash as well. Before reading Erics reply. It is stringier than white ash IME. Not sure if green has the center pith or not. Either way he got some decent firewood.

I am no expert & didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night but my first thought was ash as well.

Cottonwood raced thru my few remaining brain cells but my hamsters settled the wheel on ash.
