Ive never ended up with elm here. We started heating early in '24. And if we'd stayed there, would have burned late. Everywhere I've been here in the Northeast, folks have been running their heat a day here and there. 5 cord by January 31 here though.
I stacked some thinner ash branches in a sawbuck and got them cut to length, moved and stacked. This is row #3 from the felled ash. I then turned my attention to the big rounds. While I had my saw out, I cut grooves into them. Then, it was wedge-n-sledge time. Even though they are still "on end", most of those grooved rounds are now split all the way through. It feels good to start on those rounds. On cool mornings I can now split the half rounds and get some stacked.
Nice morning for that vs. the Summer like weather of the past few days. At least the hard part is done (hopefully) What has the yield been so far?
Well, on my 3rd rack. Once full, it'll make a cord. And, there's still the 2nd ash that was felled into the woods. I suspect that will remain as an autumn project.
Decent air, slight breeze(more would be better). OK morning for firewood making. So far(water break) Looking to be 20-25 splits in each big round.
My 1MP x27 just ran out of gas. You can use that one round left of the splits for reference to prior picture. It's not too bad to split. A bit stringy. Still prefer red oak, but no complaints. The sun chased me further into the woods. I have a few other yard things to deal with.
That's some great work, Mike. I'm sure your wood really does heat you twice, with hand splitting. We got into some nice size oak rounds today
I turned around and there it was.... gone! The pile of splits, that is. Oh, fear not, I know where they are A few more courses and I'll put it to bed. I was going to only move the splits I made yesterday, but with a nice breeze, I split a few more before moving the pile. Not sure when I'll get back to making the firewood. Busy schedule for a few days.
I got a couple more rounds split down to size. Currently in a rain-delay. Might have to suspend. At least I got enough to move tomorrow morning. A small quiet project. I don't like to generate noise on Sunday mornings. Even the thunk of the axe or, metal on metal wedging. F'n hidden knot. Grrr....
Nice dryish air, cool, breeze, and no rain. Perfect for wooding. 3racks/1 cord full, put to bed and covered. On to rack#4
With today's break from high temps and humidity, I was able to get back to making firewood. A decent number of splits. I hope to add to the splits tomorrow, which is also supposed to have favorable air. Slowly reducing the number of ash rounds. I was at it for 3+ hours this morning, with a couple of water breaks. Trying to get my stamina back to acceptable levels, to me. Some cutting, some doodling, and some wedge-n-sledge. Felt good.
Did you use a sharpie or chain saw for that? It was nice out for sure. I did a little stacking and bundle assembly. MOTS tomorrow.
After a couple of days making firewood splits, today was the day to move and stack. That fills up rack #4 from this ash tree. Before pulling a covering over it for a couple year's sleep, I moved some to the stack just down and to the left. Levels them off. That grouping of stacks is 2 long and 3 deep. The 2 just behind this stack of ash, is some 5 yr RO. That'll get burned the next heating season. That's also a single piece of roofing rubber covering all six stacks. The remaining rounds, including a larger, knotty chunk. That'll need to be trimmed/noodled and shortened before splitting it up. That'll be the end of wooding for me, until we get another good cold front to come through. I'd have done some more today, but I have a date with an oral surgeon.
