Dad’s friend Tom had a tree in his back yard that was mostly dead and asked if we wanted it for the wood. Of course we do.… Can’t tell but it’s leaning pretty good directly away from this pic. I decided to put my heavy ratchet strap on it. Then I cut the notch and found rot. Yay. It wanted to, splits on both sides. Went exactly where intended.
I took the day off to fell this sucker. I watched the weather and this morning was pretty much completely overcast, humidity off the charts. I was drenched in no time. I was really itching to get this saw in some wood. Driller ported 346 p/c on a 350. This thing is nuts. Definitely my goto saw now. Chain here has the depth gauges a little low but it didn’t care. The sign witnessed it all. When I was finally able to loosen the strap, the wood just fell apart. Did my best w/ the stump. All I loaded was the rounds in his yard. We’ll get the rest later.
Outstanding and smart by putting that strap on otherwise that could have gotten dangerous. I have one just like that, heavy leaner, can't muster the courage to fell it and now it's been rotting more and more.
That’s beyond rot!! No holding wood whatsoever. Those 346’s are just amazing little saws and then port em and they are snotty and mean!!
Nice work. Last one I dropped had a similar center but was catalpa. Heavy lean so I had done a plunge back cut and found it. No drama (smaller tree -13-14" that was going only one direction no matter what).
Ha! I needed many breaks today. What’s Brad say.. I ain’t no spring chicken anymore? Drank Powerade and water today, felt like I sweat a gallon. But seriously, I do enjoy following along on all others wood adventures here, specially when y’all are posting pics. It’s only fair to share some back. I’m just glad things went my way. Once the notch was cut, I was committed. This one is angry no doubt. The super light 350 bottom end makes it a light saber for sure. This would get anyone new to ported saws addicted, real fast.
Didnt take much cutting to get that to fall over. With what little meat was left I'm surprised it was alive at all. Smart move with the ratchet strap. I've never tried that before. Cant recall if I've ever had a barber chair happen to me. Good job getting it down safely. Yeah it was a sweat-o-rama here too. (popular term used by a former weatherman on the local TV station). Just standing outside today made you sweat, let alone doing any work. Plus it rained here this morning so it made it worse.
Dang, look at that leaf cover!! I'd have a mulcher and that would go in my garden. Your poor gutters??
Can only compost so much. Lots of tall oaks surround the property. I get to clear the gutters twice a year. In the spring when catkins plug up the works, and again later in the fall. Having a single story ranch, it's not that bad. However, gutter covers do look appealing.
Good call on the strap! Oak, and beech...beech is hollow 75,% of the time it seems (if it's a large tree) I had them installed when I got new gutters a couple years ago, it was well worth the little bit of extra $...due to roof design, our house only has gutters on the corners, so not much linear footage to pay for.
Good work Jason. I've had only one barber chair in my life but that was 1 too many. It turned out well but I needed some new shorts. On the leaf drop. I live in the woods so have plenty of leaf to tend with but with gutter covers, it keeps the leaves out. Well worth the dollars.
They dont work. Youll have to clear them off and the small bits still get in there. They jam up by the valleys too. If your house didnt have that many trees close by they would work, but seeing your place in person i can say they wont. If it gets too much for you too do hire a guy (not me ) to clean them 2-3 times a year. Ive lost a ton of money over the years not selling gutter screens/covers as I don't believe in them.
We used to have gutters. There are lots of trees. When the new siding/roof happened in 2017 we eliminated the gutters. Our house sits so that water doesn't accumulate next to it. No problems or regrets.
Smart move. If you have good drainage and the foundation is exposed enough I wouldn't have them either.
