Funny timing with the elm talk. I just got a big free load of elm, with 2 pieces of hackberry mixed in. I'm not great at telling the difference between American Elm and Red (Slippery) Elm but I doubt one or the other spits any easier :( Time for a workout. elm.jpeg

The Elm we have here (I forget what kind it is) has a dark center like that and it doesn't split too bad. The more blonde elm gets a bit nasty.

I looked at a few example pictures and it seems like this is "Slippery Elm." Lucked out apparently because it spits easier and burns better than American Elm (so I'm told.)

I believe it was Siberian Elm, that I had that was reddish like that. I'm not sure the difference between Siberian, or Slippery Elm.

    There I

was.....minding my own business at a local farm stand, getting some ears of early local corn. Anyways.....

A guy about my age comes up to and says, "I take it from the sticker on your van, that you're a wood hoarder?"
    IMG_20250719_101631.jpg

I chuckled and said I was, and so was he. But, not a member of the club, not yet anyways.

I explained the site, the 3-yr plan, GTG's, along with lots of opinions on various wooding activities. He seemed interested.

We didn't exchange contact details, but I'll keep an eye open for him the next time I want some corn.

Where can we get those decals? I don't see a "swag" section anywhere.

I've had a sticker there for a while now.

Hopefully they'll become generally available at some point, again.

Got a dead standing ash tree down for my boss. Got to keep the wood and got paid in whiskey. Win-win.

Nice load of rounds, glad you got it down safely, with no barber chair.

Yes that was the initial concern. I almost did a bore cut, but getting up to the tree in person I determined it didn't really need one, so did a shallow-ish face cut, and she went pretty early and cleanly in the back-cut. No drama.

Good deal. I like paying chain saw jobs where I can keep the wood.

I prefer cash though, but a bottle is always good!

It was Stagg Jr, hard to find around here these days and a welcome addition to the bourbon cabinet.

I recently split the Oak I brought home in August along with a small Elm that I cut in my own yard. Then I stacked it behind one of my existing wood piles. Good to have that taken care of. Might have been a couple pieces of Maple in the mix too. The Elm sure is stringy stuff. Without a hydro splitter it would be a B*#@h
