You guys have been making me awfully jealous with all that oak y'all been scrounging lately. Time for some payback! I spotted 2 down black locust near the road while I was walking the dog the other day, in my next door neighbor's woods. I cleaned up a huge mess of trees in their yard earlier this year, and they gave me permission to cut anything that was already down in their woods. Went over there with the chainsaw after work. When I stepped behind the bushes at the edge of the woods, I found it wasn't just 2. There were *FIVE* of them down!!!! All around 14-18". And there's a couple more tipped over and hung up in that stand too! Looks like I did end up with some instant karma after all! Looked like they had been down for some time. All the bark was gone. One of them had fallen into the crotch of a green ash, and it had grown around it! Only got one load out today. Spent considerable effort wiggling that one chunk free from the crotch, so I called it quits. More pics coming tomorrow! Took a "before" pic of my log storage area, for reference.
Sweet! Love how you stack your rounds. I'm lazy so I leave them on the trailer till I split and stack them.
I got caught with a trailer full of splits one time, when my neighbor across the street offered me some used kitchen cabinets. I had garbage picked some from them a couple weeks earlier for my workshop. Had to stack them in a hurry, and I ended up re-stacking them again. Trailer rarely sits full anymore!
You know, I was really happy with my honey locust branch that I scored until I read this post! Thanks A Lot! Seriously though, that's awesome! That will be worth the work for sure!
I've never gotten the privilege to process any locust down here I have to live vicariously through you guys
I split up all the small ones and a couple big ones Sunday. Still have a long way to go. I rolled a few off and slid the rest back to get the weight off the jack. The plastic wheel was getting a flat spot.lol. In hindsight, that was probably too much weight for the wagon.
He stacks his rounds. In a previous post on this thread I said I was lazy and leave them on the trailer and remove them as I split them. I was showing him a pic of how lazy guys do it..
Yeah if I had rounds that size, they probably wouldn't get stacked. Or they would be on the bottom. Might even have to use my BIL's hydro to split them in half first! Most of the stuff I deal with is forest grown stuff from my own woods, 24" and under. Far as I'm concerned, nobody's gonna call you lazy if you're splitting those by hand! Or if they do, they'll soon regret it!
You know, it's funny. Every "native range" map for BL that I've seen indicates it's more of a southern Appalachian tree. But you wouldn't know it looking at the trees around my area. There are tons of them in thick stands everywhere. It can't possibly be just from ornamentals escaping people's yards. They need to revise the range maps northward IMO.
