Hired a Tree Service updated with pics

    It needs to be done. We have a 60ft pin oak that comes right up through the deck leans over the house and is shaped like a lollipop. That will get pieced down with rigging attached to another tree.

    Also, 2 dead ash trees and a hickory, right next to the house. These will strictly get dropped somewhat over the cliff.

    Lastly, a large hickory that has some good sized branches hanging down, that could act like a javelin through part of our house and the shed.

    Total cost will range in the $1400 dollar area. I feel that this is a fair price having some experience in the industry.

    The guys coming out do great work and are fully insured.

    The only downside is (besides for having to fork out all that money), the fire pit area will probably get pretty banged up. (Stones/Stairs/plants etc)

    The upside is, peace of mind..... I have been wanting the oak down for about a year now, and have contemplated doing the others myself, but felt its not worth the risk. While felling the tree, having an exit option is very slim having the boulders surrounding the trees, which I pointed out as a concern for the one doing the felling.

    Although 3 trees will be teetering on the side of the cliff, I may be able to winch them to a safe cutting area. An estimate css this wood, will be between 3-4 cords.

    I will take pics of the trees to be taken down tomorrow and post them here. The job will take place on a Saturday. Either next or in 2 weeks.

    Oh, admit it... You just wanted all that sweet, sweet firewood! :rofl: :lol:

    That does sound like a good price. :yes: I got a red maple overhanging the house, and leaning towards it. It's pretty healthy still, but I'm probably going to have it removed sometime before I build the deck next year.

    This oak is still healthy.... but it is very tall, and its mostly trunk until the very top. A healthy wind coming from the NE, although rare would be all it takes to bring it down. A thing many overlook is root rot. Typically in wetter areas. This boulder strewn area helps and hurts tree roots.

    3-4 cords, unless the 3 being felled go over the cliff completely.

    *pin oak- around 60' high close to 30"at the base

    *Ash #1- 20' high around 12"at the base (dying)

    *Ash #2- 50' high around 16"at the base (dead standing, riddled with poison)

    *Shagbark hickory- 40'high around 12" at the base

    And since we're on the subject of "tree services"........................why is it that they cannot cut anything in "uniform" lengths????

    Twas coming back home from work about a month ago...................saw a tree service cutting some trees about 3 blocks from my dump. Stopped and asked the guys if'n the wood was spoken for. The head man said, "No, you want it?" I said, "Absolutely"..................and told them I'd be back after I heard the chain saws stop. He told me he'd cut it all in firewood lengths for me to pick up

    The lengths varied from 10" to 30"!! What the hell???

    $1400 sounds very reasonable. They would be asking that much per tree if it is within reach of your house here. Hopefully you can leverage the relationship for some free wood in the future.


    My gripe exactly. I almost have one guy's crew trained, almost. They got it close to 16" on their last drop. But for the most part that is why I prefer the guy with the log loads. Then they vary from 10'-20' and I get one odd piece per log.

    You are making a very smart move. Knowing what you can, can't or shouldn't attempt on your own shows how well you are in control of yourself. Now just don't get hurt pulling those trees up and off the cliff. I had a bunch of trees removed. No regrets at all. Don't miss them one bit. Sleep better too. Those nor'easter we get can tip about any tree over ESP. If the ground is soft.

    That's a great price for 5 trees. And it'll make some good firewood in a few years :thumbs:

    Having worked on a tree crew, I'll tell you why pieces get cut to weird lengths. 1) speed 2) most people can't say 16" in Spanish :rofl: :lol:

    From the description of the pin oak,

    that sounds like a $1400 tree on it's own.
