Split up the crabapple from Mom's place and ended up with an over-full tote 1/3+ cord, small to medium splits with plenty of shorts/chunks so not pretty. More in the pickup that needs cut and split but not sure if I will include it as a buy all or not. Still very wet as it was a live tree that fell over a few weeks ago. Just looking for ideas from others if I end up posting on FMP. Years ago I sold it for $35 wheelbarrow load, as much wood as would fit without falling off, or 2 for $70. Would rather not mess with the single loads due to time but we will see. I will be up front about its age and lack of seasoning for any takers. Thanks in advance.
Yes, for smoking. I messaged one customer from many years ago when I was selling by wheelbarrow to see if he is interested in the entire tote so we will see. Who knows, I may have ruined the entire tote by not making the splits prettier or separating it out the uglies, but I would think most smokers would not be too worried about it. On the plus side, I don't have to feed it while it dries out.
I would definitely keep what you have left separate. I have always found that smaller quantities sell for more money. You might get lucky and find someone that caters or does a BBQ side hustle that is willing to pay decent money for bulk. I wouldn't take less than $170 for a face cord of apple.
Its my understanding that crab apple and apple are almost identical in smoking quality/flavor. I do much better selling in bundles/bags as I don't get it that often and nice splits can be a challenge. I like the wheelbarrow selling strategy. Maybe try a smaller tote too? If its not in the way and not a priority to sell why not maximize your profit? I would get at least double over normal firewood. If no takers you could always drop the price. This not knowing your market area. Do FBM comps and price accordingly?
Smoking wood I think would bring more money in small packages. What is the average guy going to want on hand for occasionally smoking? I see occasionally by me a person selling it by the box, a couple of cubic feet worth.
Thanks everyone for the input. I think I will rethink the one sell and go for smaller, wheelbarrow, size and see what happens. At least there is no hurry to get rid of it.
I've sold the sweet smelling woods like cherry and apple for "Holiday" firewood. I'd start advertising on FBMP about 2 weeks before Thanksgiving thru Christmas week. Sold very good. Of course you command top $$$ for it.
Agreed, the more its handles and the smaller the quantity then add smoking/cooking. This is premium, you should do well to slow down a bit make it more presentable (photo op) for your FBMP. Pleasing to the eye and a smoking/cooking wood---Make mint with this opportunity. Maybe check FB to see if there are any local BBQ pages and list there. Do you get enough to supply a restaurant/bbq joint/food truck?
Been years since I've had any quantity of it. Have a little more to work up and wondering if I should make discs with it? Most is 2"-4" with some maybe 5"-6". Thinking 2" think placing it in smaller boxes full. Hmmm, what to do.
Easier to store and sell that way. My last apple score had the wood precut to lots of random odd ball sizes and shapes. I've had the thought of selling it by weight. I weighed several apple bundles and 16-17lbs so a 20# bag?
Ive yet to sell it, but I think I've found a local chef who will buy it as I explained what it is and he didn't seem fussy.
