How high does zoning allow you to build, especially with a non-permanent structure? Just wondering if you could elevate a rack enough to get more sun if you could face it in the proper direction. I have about 2 acres of open ground behind my barn and line IBC totes 2 high facing south. All the sun and wind you can handle.
I've had cherry that sat a while. Outside was bone dry and punky. Heart wood was solid and a bit wet. Totally pristine and good to go.
If you have enough 8" or longer and straight (preferably without bark), I'd bag that and sell it for a premium. Everything else I would bag as chunks at a lower price but still comparable to other smoking wood chunks.
The rack is more or less going to be a divider to fit into an overhang where ive stacked bundle wood in the past. Gets some afternoon sun. Since ive abandoned storing bundle wood here (for now) i figured id utilize the space. Also a two cord rack behind the shed that i can store some too.
Yes cherry heartwood lasts a long time. In the future I'd like to build an Adirondack chair from cherry heartwood, as well as the other rot resistant woods I scrounge.
Stack as much as you can! I'm really focusing on bundle and smoking wood (small amounts) right now to maximize profits while I don't have a skid steer to move bulk wood. I might need to learn some tips from you.
Cut and split the rest of the apple this morning. 1/4-1/3 came out full length and split straight. I had an idea of selling the chunks by weight? Weigh a few bundles of dry apple and have the same but by the chunk and in a bag. Thoughts? These were some bags I had already filled just to store chunks/shorts for storage.
For presentation purposes, I'd probably avoid pet food/litter bags, but that's just me. I found plain white sand bags on Amazon. Not free but inexpensive compared to firewood bags and you can write the price and what's inside for easy identification. You can put approximately the same amount (by looks or weight) in the bag of either splits or chunks. That's what I do. How long have you find the drying time to be for apple? I hope to get my and this weekend.
A neighbor had a silver maple blow down he wanted me to remove. I cut it up Friday night and brought it home. I split it Saturday morning. I made perfect bundle wood from the heart wood and everything else was stacked for bulk wood. The same neighbor had a double stem cherry that came down across one of his trails. I need to get back there and clean it up. Sent from my motorola edge plus 5G UW (2022) using Tapatalk
Goldilocks wood for sure. I have about 16 totes of silver maple. One of my favorites! Sent from my motorola edge plus 5G UW (2022) using Tapatalk
I have about a cord of silver maple rounds to process yet. Will you mix the SM with other woods for bundles or sell by itself? I'll mix shoulder wood 1/3 with other hardwoods in bundles. Ill keep some aside and/or mix it in the stack. Ive been mixing 18 month dried tulip in with current bundles. I try to avoid having higher btu wood (sugar maple, b;ack birch, beech, ash etc) in the mix, but if they generate a nice split and i need it for such, into the stack they go. I guess i think like a burner too much?
I'm a mixer. Anything that makes nice bundles goes in the stack. But in the summer, I go heavier on the SM and other lighter woods. In the winter there's usually a bit of walnut, cherry (not the really premium splits) and mulberry. Since I know it will be burned inside I try to include some higher BTU wood. A customer asked me if I would be interested in cutting and taking a mulberry trunk that a tree service left behind at the neighbor's house across the street. Naturally I was happy to help. That was during the winter. Fast forward to Saturday afternoon. I finally made time to get to it. Everything had to be noodled because this old guy has no interest in lifting 125-150# rounds. I got all but 5 rounds in the truck. It was squatting a bit. I'll go back for the rest. Today I got it all split. I mixed it with silver maple in 3 different totes and kept a few nice splits out for bundles. I still have 4 tree jobs to start/finish including this one.
