Got two more loads today plus a load of Norway maple across a friends driveway from last nights storm. Shutting down for a week of vacation.
I HOPE that the Forest Circus has another score like this, this season Did someone mention Scenery? Unfortunately, not all the road going in looked this Good, there was about 3/4 of a mile that was washed out pretty badly, some of the gullies I “Graded” a bit with the back of the trailer when the tires didn’t quite reach the bottom, but I am sure that deterred some “Less Determined” cutters, leaving more for us going in At the log decks this was the view, standing in front of the trailer, with the log deck behind me Sadly, the GrandDogter, won’t be going with us wood cutting anymore, she made her Final trip to the vet in March, the Cancer in her leg advanced to the point, that it was finally time. Willow sure did Love going wood cutting with Grammy and GrandPaw. If she heard saws being warmed up, or saw the trailer hooked up, she would find an open door, and make a beeline for her Beloved “Big Red Truck” It won’t be the same without her getting in the way, “Supervising” Doug
Thank You, We Miss her Very Much. I knew about the “Dirty Little Secret of Pet Adoption “ that they don’t talk about beforehand, but how do you say NO to this when your Daughter is saying “Can I Keep Her?” Especially, when you Don’t Want to say NO? BTW, does anyone know of a good place to get “Eye Gaskets “? Mine seem to “Leak” a bit when this subject comes up, getting better, less severe, and less frequent, but still happens on occasion Doug
Thank You, I’ve known that Dirty Little Secret for about half a century now, but the Love and Happiness they bring us, is more than worth the pain, that inevitably accompanies them Seems that my eye gaskets started leaking, right about when the time was getting close, I suspect it’s related Doug
We just have to make the Most of the Time that they share in our Lives, and accept that it will Hurt when they are no longer with us, but what they added to our Lives is more than worth the Heartache we feel when they are no longer with us Doug ps Greg, I Apologize for the thread drift
Well, I guess if the OP is contributing to the Thread Drift, there’s at least some implied Approval Doug
Well the first pile (the larger of the two) is at least all cut, now will be some splitting and hauling awhile as long as this incredible weather holds out
Yep, as I had hoped, the Forest Circus did have another log deck, like they had back in 2019. This one was more recently cut, but it was a much larger deck, with better access, and closer to home. It opened on July 25th, but I was wasn’t able to get to it until August 14th. While not as Good as the scenery at the first log deck, I had no complaints about the view. The first load, I was by myself, and just loading rounds The access was great, lots of room to maneuver trailers and for multiple cutters to work without crowding each other I was there on a weekday, so crowding wasn’t a problem, but there were two other guys cutting when I got there. They were very friendly, we had an enjoyable chat, and was loading some big rounds when they finished, and they came over and helped me load, sure didn’t expect it, but I did really appreciate it, ended up being about a cord and a half, for each of the first two loads, but that was a bit more than I should have been pulling behind the Jeep. My Jeep is only rated to tow 3,500#, I did weigh the second load, yeah it was showing 5,450# just on the trailer axles. The second load, the Wife went with me and we took the splitter in my 6x10 enclosed trailer, that makes life much easier. The Wife enjoys running the splitter, unfortunately the second load, she only got about a quarter cord split when the ram seal started leaking badly enough that I decided it was time to shut it down and finished the load with rounds. A friend helped me replace the seals on the splitter, and the Wife and I made another run yesterday, the splitter held up perfectly We got another cord, but we got a late start, and only had time to get about 3/4 of it split, the last 1/4 cord or so I loaded as quarters This is what Good Douglas Fir looks like The Forest Circus wood cutters info sheet said that there was Douglas Fir, White Fir, Noble Fir, Hemlock, and Cedar in the deck. The first two loads I got some of everything but Cedar, I could even smell the Christmas Tree scent of the Noble Fir, and Hemlock has it’s own scent, but not as pleasant as the Noble This last load was all first rate D Fir This was how we were set up I would cut rounds and roll them to the Wife, and she would split, and toss splits straight into the trailer, then I would alternate cutting, rolling rounds and stacking splits in the trailer as needed Taking the splitter in the enclosed trailer, sure made things a lot easier I’m still splitting rounds from the last load, plus some rounds that had been waiting patiently to be cut and split from a neighbor’s maple, just about caught up on all that, then get those quarters split and stacked, and the splits unloaded and stacked, then hopefully get another couple loads out of that deck Doug
We've been getting noble first exclusively for Christmas trees. They smell really good. I do keep the trunks of the Christmas trees and burn those in my fire pit outside.
We used to get Fresh U-Cut Noble for Christmas Trees, nuthin like walking into the house after being gone for awhile, and walking into the smell of a Fresh Noble in the House The first Christmas in this house, we had a 10.5’ Noble, smelled Awesome, it was fine getting it in the house bailed, but it wasn’t going out the door unbailed, so we started cutting limbs off, we had a fire, in the fireplace in the family room, and Jumpinjawhosifats, those limbs went off like camera flash cubes . Yeah the wood stove in the living room had that tree so dry, it was practically explosive, so after that we started using an artificial tree, it’s a good looking tree, but it just isn’t the same, but better safe than sorry. Watching those limbs in the fireplace, was scary thinking about what could happen Doug
