A friend of my moms messaged her a few days ago asking if I’d be interested in picking up some cedar she had cut and put out on the curb. It’s only 8 miles away and I like to burn cedar in my fireplace so I said sure. The woman sent a picture to mom of the wood taken from the street looking directly at the cut ends. Nothing big. Going to be a quick easy haul….haha! I get there today and see how long the pieces are and that the camera made the rounds look small. Boy did they grow in person!
I’ve been nursing a sore back for a week- tweaked it last Friday and was in quite a bit of pain most of the week. Had visited my chiropractor 3 times since Monday. The last thing I needed to be doing today was heavy lifting. Needless to say, I tried to use my legs as much as possible but I had to wrestle these things on the truck and got it done. Thankfully it was cedar and not oak but it was fresh cut and had very small growth rings so it was heavy for what it was. What I learned today was to never trust an old woman with a camera! Haha!

Ouch, yeah cameras can lie. At 8 miles I would’ve gone home to grab a saw. Wouldn’t have any choice really, I couldn’t lift those anymore LOL

Guess you can tell I’m not old enough to know better. Haha. You would think at 48, I’d be a little smarter by now.

I would've come back with a saw. My back would've been hurting like yours trying to load those. Back pain and making firewooding kinda go hand in hand. Too bad they were bucked. Nice mill logs there.
Take it slow for a bit and be safe Joe. Maybe Mrs. Rider can give you a massage! ;)

I have a potential score to work next week and there's some cedar for the taking. Hoping they are decent and big enough to mill.

The go getter, ambitious, hard work ethic trumps our common sense at times. Ask me how I know.

I agree with you on burning cedar. It goes great in a mix with pine. I haven't cut any in years, just not available at my elevation. Nice score! Now where's that IcyHot?

Wow those were no joke! With my back there would have been no way I would even try to tackle those.

Be careful, back issues are nothing you want to mess with!

And when I worked at the sawmill, we were always super happy to get some cedar, because it smelled nice and was light weight compared to what we usually sawed.

I scheduled for Tuesday when I was last in on Thursday. I knew I couldn’t sit still over the long weekend.

We don’t burn many Cedar Splits, unless it’s knotty, or goofy grained. The nice splitting straight grained gets split small for kindling, Cedar makes some of the Best Kindling you can find

Ok, well, old railroad ties split small and soaked in used motor oil, is about the Best Kindling I have ever used, ya don’t even need newspaper for that, but other than that, Cedar is the Best.

Yeah, I understand the “Never Trust an Old Woman with a Camera “ statement.

I’m guessing that most of you are experienced enough to know from these pics, that tree was MORE than 40’ tall

The Wife gets a call from her Friend Mary, telling her that she just had a Spruce tree About 40’ Tall cut down, do we want it for Firewood? Sure, that sounds easy enough, and won’t take long, and about the same 8 or so miles away.

BTW, Mary didn’t send us any pictures.

So we get there, expecting what a 15”, Maybe 18” diameter tree, uhm, Mary that tree is closer to 40” in diameter, than 40’ tall

We came back with the trailer, and some bigger saws. There was one log, nothing particularly special about it, but it just kept saying to me “I’m not just firewood “, so I did bring a mill, and slabbed the one log, I hadn’t done any milling in awhile, so I enjoyed it, but didn’t have any specific uses in mind for it

There was this spot in Mary’s yard, that a quick, spur of the moment project idea popped into my head for, and when Mary saw it, she really liked it

But, I’m getting old too, and after rasslin those rounds into the trailer, I decided that I was pretty much done messing with rounds that size anymore

Look into using a mix of DMSO/frankincense rub?
