Just curious what others prefered methods are. I fairly well eliminated most sugary drinks from my diet (moderated exceptions of course). Used to ge a Gatorade head since way back when they had just 3 flavors. Past few years I've only really been drinking water for hydration purposes. Am in midst of trying to add back in some electrolytes. It seems like I kinda run out of gas on a heavy sweating day, even when I drink half dozen bottles of water. Hoping adding some salts and sugars back in will mitigate that. This thought train originated at my local Sheetz last week. They had these little packets of drink mix sitting beside the checkout. Caught my eye and the flavor sounded good so I bought a single packet to try. I think I'm late to the party...it's called Liquid IV. Anyways, tried it last Saturday and it really did seem refreshing. I have been known to keep a little bottle of chocolate milk in my cooler and go for that in the afternoon (it works, try it) when I'm starting to peter out a little. I'm going to order a 16 pack of these little mix thingies and give them a go. They have several flavors but I already tried this one and know I like it (who don't like a bomb pop?). What do youins like to drink to replace the sweat?
After about 3 cups of coffee I drink bottled water for the rest of the day until it's beer thirty. I've done this plan for about 20 years and it seems to work.
I am looking for suggestions as well. I tend to drink water and consume fruit like bananas and citrus.
Coffee and Beer will likely be popular choices I'm sure. Oddly, both are diuretics. It could be that I'm just getting old and my gas tank don't hold as much fuel these days?
I did the powdered Gatorade thing when I roofed full time. Supply house sold it in big pouches. I drank a boatload of it and never seemed to help in hot weather. Now I wont work long days as I cant take the heat and do very little roofing any more. Mostly small jobs. Water and seltzer are my hydrating choices. As it gets warmer I'll be taking more of the half liter water bottles with me. I buy a case and reuse the bottle for a couple weeks. I've heard of the chocolate milk trick as its supposed to be better than sports drinks. I need to give it a try sometime. I wont touch energy drinks. Lifetime coffee drinker, but give me one of those and I'm shaking like a leaf later on.
I had a summer job when I was in my late teens working for a local farm/milk processing/distribution company. For a few days I had the task of painting the front of the processing plant. It was very hot one day, so every little while I would go grab a fresh cold chocolate milk. Large quantities of chocolate milk and hot weather don't mix. I got very sick and it was many years before I drank chocolate milk again.
Hydration on work day starts the day/night before. If it is going to be a hot one and I plan on working a lot in the heat, laying off alcohol the day before goes a long way. Drinking 16-32 ounce of water before leaving the house is a good plan and for me, only snacking throughout the day and primarily snacking on fruit and veggies which are already high in water content. I will mix in 1 gatorade and 1 snapple ice tea to break up the monotony of water but I will generally drink a gallon of fluids by lunch time. Drinking before you feel thirsty is good practice. With all that said, some days I'm not as disciplined and just don't keep up like I should and end up quitting early.
I have tried to pre-hydrate before. It all just comes back out fairly quicky. Seems like I need to be physical a bit before any of it stays with me for a while. Weirdness possibly localized to myself...work day...lots of sweating...tons of water going in to the point of no possibility of being underhydrated...still get thirsty? The medical sites say 'could be underlying condition. One of those 'conditions' is an electrolyte imbalance. Hmmm.
Usually mostly just water but find that mixing water and a sport drink 50/50 tastes a bit better and will consume a little more of it. Win/Win
My wife started buying LMNT drink pouches to put into our water bottles. They actually taste good and are healthier thank Gatorade or other "sports drinks". I can say they work quite well. LMNT | Zero Sugar Electrolytes | Paleo-Keto Friendly Hydration
After my morning coffee, it's water all day and night, winter and summer. In the very hot I do need a Gatorade or similar or I get muscle cramps and a little dizziness and out of gasness. I've become extremely sober and not on purpose.
Looks like good stuff. My body doesn't like Stevia unfortunately. Was happy that the Liquid IV is available with cane sugar. They do have sugar free varieties as well.
Getting old sucks...and I'm not even that old yet. I used to work until I stopped sweating and that's when I knew it was time to hit the water jug. If I tried that now it probably wouldn't be good. If I know I'm going to really be sweating I make up some fairly weak iced tea with a little sugar and a maybe 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon. Tastes good enough that I actually want to drink some.
I take a gallon jug of water with me whenever I'm working on the property away from the faucet. Refill as needed. If working in the yard or garage its the hose.
I'm pretty much on par with theburtman regarding getting fluids. Works for me, don't like any of the sports drinks. I do increase salt intake in sweaty weather.
Usually just water, preferably cold, like on ice cold. I can't do stevia - it feels like it's burning a hole in my intestines. So do most of the sugar substitutes/artificial sweeteners, especially aspartame and sucralose. I had a co-worker who would suck down gatorades instead of water - while taking his blood pressure meds. SMH.
