Took a walk along the oconee river this morning with the girlfriend. I came across this tree and thought the leaves were interesting

Wondering if anyone knows what it is?

Looks like you're right grizzly. Weird how it's got different leaf shapes in the same tree

Sasafrass it is. They have a very disincentive smell.

I think it's just sass and mulberry that do that. That's why my answer was so quick-- it's not mulberry. There is a third type of sass leaf not pictured that looks like a mitten.

I've not seen many around here. This trail along the river though has lots of different tree species. I always enjoy walking it

One of the hardest to kill back after cutting, I have three that will not die no matter the amount of glyphosate

    That's mulberry, not sass.
Mulberry leaves are jagged around the outside, sass is smooth.
Bark is wrong for sass also.

That's a good catch... I have a couple sass on the property, and the leaves are smooth. They're all small, and growing almost like vines the way that they're tangled up with the trees they're growing next to. The bark on the sass looks more like ash.

So I guess the stuff in my yard is Mulberry - never looked that close at it.
My neighbor has a large one on his property and the bark is identical to the pictures. The berries and the bird droppings I'd rather not deal with

The fruit will definitely tell the story and yes, the edge of the leaf.

On the sassafras, you can always tell once you cut into it as it has such a sweet smell to it. My favorite wood to cut for sure. Also, some have called the sassafras the Michigan tree because of the mitten look. Michigan's lower peninsula is shaped like a mitten.

I think it is White Mulberry, not Red. That would be a huge Red Mulberry. White Mulberry is often that large. Definitely not Sassafras
