They had a AMA Supercross race last night in Pittsburgh. Awesome racing. Was a cold night once the sun went away. We have closest to furthest young Joe Dirt from OPE. Me, my wife Kathy. Harley Dave and his wife Dawn. 20250426_175618(0).jpg 1926d755-79dd-4b89-8692-3b4a64c3c449.jpg

Picked up a load of materials on our trip yesterday (which I'll share a few pictures from later on) and cut the angles on 60 sticks for my truss-rafters this morning. Need some more stuff to join them into the full 16' units.

Oh man! That made me laugh! Reminds me when I used the shop vac at work and the last person sucked up copier toner. I learned that day toners goes right through Shop Vac filters!

Cool! I offered the new trampoline's safety cage/netting/spring protector pads for free on a local group. (they are basically disposable in the wind out here, not worth the effort of putting them up) Sure enough a lady messaged, her husband and son came out and picked them up. Most free I offer here people say it's too far  . Who knew a family in town needed a 16' round trampoline safety cage/etc.

Chamber Cove, St.Lawrence is a place I'd wanted to go for some time. The southern extremity of the Burin Peninsula is beautiful in good weather, and unforgiving in bad weather, and steeped in history. One of our worst natural disasters was a tsunami which devastated the area in 1929, but the piece of history that draws many tourists to Chamber Cove in particular came somewhat later.

On February 18, 1942, three American ships ran aground on this coast in a terrible storm. USS Truxtun met her end right here at Chamber Cove, USS Pollux at nearby Lawn Point (which I unfortunately just didn't have time to make it to on this occasion). USS Wilkes grounded nearby as well but was able to shift weight rearward and back off.

Seaman Ed Bergeron chipped handholds in the ice to scale the cliff, and made off in search of help without knowing where the nearest source of help would be. Fate led him to Iron Springs Mine, and long story short, the community of St.Lawrence helped rescue 46 survivors and nurse them back to health. Tragically, 110 drowned and/or froze to death.
No offense to my friends from the southern states, but we all know times were different back then, and particularly touching is the story of the only black survivor, Lanier Phillips of Georgia, who received his first kind word from a white person, and was, for the first time in his life, treated equally to his white counterparts, here in St.Lawrence. Lanier later became the US Navy's first black sonar technician and joined forces with Martin Luther King Jr., eventually also receiving an honorary degree from the Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2008 for his efforts to end discrimination. He made several trips back to the place that he credits with changing his life, before he died at age 88 in 2012.

USS Pollux took 93 of her crew with her, with the survivors being assisted by the nearby community of Lawn.

Chamber Cove offers a beautiful view on a sunny day, and maybe I'll get that next time, but yesterday the fog offered a subtle, ghostly hint as to what it must have been like on a snowy February day, raising all those injured people over the cliffs.

Good morning people. Here in Pittsburgh doing the carpenter thing. Built myself a burn pit for all the amazon boxes last night. Not a bricklayer but I enjoyed the project. 20250428_185423.jpg

    Not a problem.

It was a great day. In the community itself, the sun was shining bright.

Have a confirmed hummingbird sighting in my yard at the feeder by the grill. My wife is pretty certain she saw one u the other day, but we both saw this one. A female.

    The males usually arrive first.

I've seen one the last two days. Early here, they usually are back right about the 15th of May. Needles to say, the feeders are hung.
