Today I received a call from an unknown number. The gal on the other end identified herself as Megan with the Nebraska Department of agriculture. Turns out she had just been at the Kwikstop in Mullen and spied my firewood bundles. She told me everything was good except that on my labels, I am supposed to state what county the wood was harvested from.
My labels state the size of the bundle ( 1cubic foot), which is required. Moisture content, (not sure if she said that’s required) but said it was good. My name and contact number, all good.
So I nor the convenience store is in any trouble. I just need to identify the county that the wood came from.
Also, in Nebraska, at least for bundles the wood is supposed to be free of any bark. Which mine is and she made note of it.
So at my earliest convenience/opportunity I need to rectify the label issue.

Megan was polite helpful and accommodating with my questions. Didn’t really seem like she was cut out to be a government employee. I even had her call me back to answer a couple questions about selling larger quantities. Apparently even then the county of origin is supposed to be identified as a label or something attached to it.
I guess they don’t do systematic inspections statewide. More like random spot checks. Like if they are getting gas at a station and spy bundles for sale, they might give them a looking over.

Is/does anyone else have or supposed to follow some rules for bundle sales in their area?

I wonder if the county requirement is an attempt to get ahead of quarantine by county for invasives?

She told me Nebraska is not a quarantine state. So no restrictions about crossing county lines. But location printed on labels so it can be tracked if there is an issue…. Or something like that

I wonder what would happen if the wood was from a Chinese elm?

My bundles have no label. Couple years back one of my regulars had to remove them from being sold as they weren't labeled. State weights and measures inspector checking the gas pumps spotted them.

I printed some up and stuck them inside so he could sell them. He really didn't care if they had them or not and only one here customer asked about them. If it was a chronic issue I would put them in al of mine, but its an extra step that I'd rather not go through.

We have a program where "Connecticut Grown" is a logo sellers can place on their product if its from the state. Maybe I'll do that and charge more??? :makeitrain"
