Best Craigslist score to date. 3 White oaks down, and 2 Popular trees down. Nice couple to boot...They both helped me load up. Love it when that happens. So I turned this

    into this...

Then into this... 2 rows deep of new stuff today

Best part is there is still another load and a half to go back and get.
This is some HEAVY stuff.. My back is screaming at me tonight.

Nice! Sure that's all oak and poplar? In that first pic, the logs with the black growth on the ends look like sweetgum...

What's left of a Poplar at my SIL's looks like that.
It's been sitting there for about 6 weeks.

I was thinking that it was sweetgum, he told me the tree guys said it was Popular. That's ok.. The old 22 Ton can handle it.. This will be my first year burning. I was able to burn for about 3 weeks this past winter, after we had the insert installed. Thanks for the welcome. I have been lurking here for a while. Of course I loaded up the white oak first :dancer:

When I go back for that load, I will get some up close pics. Hopefully that will help us identify it.

The lighter colored grey stuff on the right is definitely poplar. The other stuff I'm pretty sure is sweetgum.

If you have hydros, it's no big deal, but it's a HUGE pain to split by hand

I think they have a burn pit area, and an open fireplace for the "romantic fire" Those rounds were all braches that they had already cut off, and removed the brush.. They wanted to open up their yard a little for the kids, and this stuff was just too big for them to handle.

Now you have me wondering? Am I mistaken in thinking those large logs with the long grain bark is white oak? In the first pic next to the wood with black stains

The light grey logs laying right above the stump are poplar

In the first pic, I see poplar and possibly sweetgum. I'm not seeing any white oak

:saw: :tree::axe: That's be mine! I've been at it hard this year. It goes the length of the fence, then behind the shed to the near side of the yard, and starts to come down that fence line.

I did the exact same thing when I was getting started. Thought sweetgum was oak and boy was I excited. Then I got shut down when I started splitting and started an ID thread :headbang:

Don't sweat it, your ID skills will get better as you go on.

And, I'm only pretty sure that's sweetgum, try to split it and let us know how it goes and we'll know for sure
