It was a cold start on our way to scout out a new spot for a derby next weekend. We walked about a mile and decided that was enough will bring machines for the derby. the boy got cold on the walk then setting up the gear before the pop up. We had a heater I made some hot chocolate. Fishing was slow I didn’t think he was gonna pull out of it. Thankfully the flag on one of his traps popped up! we ended up having a good day and and know where we are not going back to this weekend!
Got in a few hours this morning. Fishing was good between 8 and 10 am. I had about a 45” Muskie come through the hole but she didn’t stay long enough for a picture. Spearing sight fishing hole in 7’ of water. 30” pike
Welp, that escalated quickly. I removed the crank seal before I learned the crank case needs to be split to properly install the seal…got a full gasket kit with rings. I guess she will be fresh for the boy.
Was there much ice noise to keep you up at night? What a cool experience to stay overnight out there! Beautiful northern lights
There was some cracking, popping and a couple of Booms. But we all expect it, know what it is and if wakened just roll over and go back to sleep. I had foam ear plugs in that helps too. I like waking up putting the lines in, then making coffee. As the sun comes up fishing might get hot so wait until about 9 to make breakfast. Bacon, eggs and pancakes in the shack on the ice, love it. of course you might get a bite at any minute so make sure your rods are secure and keep an eye on them.
Has your group tried a sleeper on Upper Red Lake? Still a good daytime walleye bite, and the possibility of a good night crappie bite if in the right place. My brothers and I had a period back in the day of alternating sleeper weekends between LOW and URL during the crappie boom years. Lots of good fishing and memories!
Not the group of 4 but with my friend Dan ( he is the tallest guy in the group) I have spent 1 two night trip on Upper Red Lake. It was also a fun trip. I'd go back again but with only the one trip to compare with LOW we caught more fish but many were small. Upper Red we caught fewer fish but average size was larger. I'm sure it changes all the time though, Day to day and week to week.
Fun morning at the lake today. My wife and granddaughter came out for a visit. We spent most of the time playing in the snow, but she did catch a small perch!
Derby day went well yesterday. Myself, wife and kids and my buddy’s family. Weather cooperated with only a light wind. Caught a decent amount of fish. Fresh air and fun for all! We would normally fish today as well but some snow kinda fouled it up.
