I've never used square ground chains. Don't think I ever even seen any to be honest.

Running a skip chain you're missing... teeth! ;)
Square ground is a slippery slope. Being a machinist you'll most likely start looking at a surface grinder and daydream about ways you can fixture your chains to it to grind your own. Best to avoid the debacle altogether

I've also never used a skip tooth chain either. Our saws are small with shorter bars then a lot of you guys. 24 inch is the longest bar we have.

Yep, and it's more durable than round.

I tried a skip on a 32” but preferred full comp. I’ve been teaching one of my kids how to grind chain.

It comes down to time. If you have plenty time, round is fine. If you’re looking for production and reducing time taken, it’s would be worth exploring. If no one around you has a grinder you will either need to hand file or get a grinder. The Stihl Hexa is close to square and it can be sharpened on a regular grinder but needs the Hexa wheel. It’s to new in my area for my dealer to have an opinion yet. I have 2 loops cut just fine, I converted it to square grind. I don’t have a regular grinder.

Right now I have round ground but hopefully soon I will buy a simington grinder and go to square ground
I run skip chains on 24” plus I feel it cuts better than full comp

I’ve thought about those Simmington grinders. Anyone have one here & do they like it?

65cc + saw? What depth gauge/raker guide do you use?

Fine looking grind. What color wheel? I’m using the Madson’s blue wheels and multiple point diamond dressers. I think I’m going back to single point. I’ve noticed quite a few white wheels in the square grinders.

I had a Simington. I liked it, good for the price point. I would have no problems owning/using one again.
