Need a new washing machine

Maytag Neptune here...they claim bearing replacement can be done by a novice using their "special tool" in 1.5 hrs...I'd say that may be possible, as last time the time suck was getting the old one off, with no "special tool"

 

Some people put black n white tiles on the floor, right next to each other, out in the open, on purpose!

 

I disassembled the machine then ran to get the tools brought them back and hour later. They offered me a job. Lol

I never loan tools out so I was appreciative they offered them to me when I ordered the stuff to do the job. Brought them back asap.

 

The guy I am going to get the tool n parts from is over 1.5 hrs from here, but you order everything and he ships it to you, then you send it back n he refunds about 2/3 of your money...it ends up being about $75 in parts and $75 tool rental, shipping included. You have 10 days to return tool.
He has a website dedicated to DIY repairs on the Maytag Neptune series (and others) I did a repair on a $200 control board for about $10 through him too...and learned how to prevent failure again, which has worked thus far. (it was pretty simple...unplug the washer when not using...it is susceptible to power surges, so unplugging limits that exposure for sure!)
Found out about an upgraded door lock/wax motor option for this model too.

 

The guy said that the reason that they don’t do the repair any more is that the replacement bearings only last about a year. Sure enough about a year later it started making noise again. I replaced them again and only got a year, that was enough for me. It wasn’t that bad to do I think it was pressing the new bearings in I needed a helper because you need to hold one side and drive the other and my arms ain’t logging to reach in the drum and be on the other side at the same time.

what med the repair worse was getting the machine in and out of the closet they live in. Then out to the garage. The wife said no to me doing it in the kitchen! Some nerve!

 

Its been probably close to 15 years since I did mine last...different model though...
I do recall reading that one of the issues that takes the bearings out was using the wrong kind/too much detergent in the machine...they said to use HE only, or you could use regular detergent, but had to use WAY less, due to the lower water volume in the machine...too much soap would over suds and get past the seal, takes the grease outta the bearing.

 

That could very well be our problem. I throw my clothes in a hamper and a day or so later they magically are back in the closet for me to dirty again. What happens in between I don’t know. Lol

 

I feel for you guys.. I could have repaired as the basement is gutted to concrete..
Why you ask? Septic backed up in the fall; gutted it to concrete that was a chitty job..
I had 40 yard dumpster… filled it

 

With three boys and living in the country we gave up and bought Speed Queen after going through washers and dryers every couple of years. 8 years and still going strong!

Not sure if this is completely up to date, but this is who owns what in appliances:
Whirlpool owns Jenn-Air, Maytag, Amana, Roper and KitchenAid
Haier (China) owns GE, Hotpoint, Cafe and Profile
Electrolux owns Frigidaire and Tappan

We went with Speed Queen at our home as well…both the washer and dryer. We are well past the 7 year warranty, and never have to think about them.

 

They are pricey, but great. Made here in Wisconsin. If/ when I need to replace our washer, I'll get a speed queen. The washer we had when we got the house in 08, went a few years ago. Luckily Mom had accumulated a few things being a realtor for 25+ years, and one was a newish washer, it even matched the white drier lol. I cleared that from the pole shed and installed it. Been zero issue since. Knock on wood. That was one nice thing that was accumulated in the shed, most is junk that she gathered and Dad allowed her to stash. Last Fall I cleared through out to store my 25' boat on it's trailer. This spring more will go. Lots of old furniture like couches that Mom accumulated. Unfortunately there's more than just that because she is a hoarder. 85% is garbage. The remaining 15% has to be sorted out and located.

Mom gave the ariens 46" cut lawn tractor in Fall. It apparently just needs a battery, so I'll get that going, take it home and run it until I sell it for a zero turn. It's technically only 2" less cut than my garden tractor, but it's probably a better mower. We'll see.

I had to repair the gas clothes drier a couple years back. Some switch internally. It wasn't bad but not easy for what it was. Lots of sharp metal.

 

I think we have a maytag, maybe like bravos or something like that. Bought it when we moved...got this particlar one cause the m-i-l had bought.the same and liked it. It's one of those low water machines. We've gotten to where we're not crazy about it...we have a few well sediment issues. And the machine has started acting up a bit. We were/are contemplating getting a Speed Queen, even though we should still be w/i the 10 year warranty on the maytag. Seems sometimes its not worth fighting warranty stuff...esp since we're not 100% thrilled with the machine...

Speed Queen here as well. When old one took a dirt nap we went to appliance store and wife said: I want a white machine without all of the fancy settings and bullet proof! The salesman didn’t even hesitate he said you want a Speed Queen. Have both washer and dryer for can’t remember how many years and flawless. Now, just jinxed myself

 

Speed Queen washer here also and the dryer will be the same when that sh**s the bed which probably won't be very long it's squeaking like terrible but we are gonna run it till it blows .
The Speed Queens been flawless for three years now !
