Pine causes chimney fires. I’ll explain why, slightly different take on it than others. You’ll get people that burn mostly hardwoods, sometimes seasoned a day, month, couple months. In other words wet. They clog up their chimneys routinely but the wet hardwood never burns hot enough to touch it off. Then they run out of wet hardwood one year. Got this pine that’s been laying around no one wants. It’ll heat the house let’s use it. It’s also dry and before you know it their chimney is on fire and a myth is born
My husband traveled for work for several years, I found a pine pallet mfg company that would deliver scraps for cheap. Cool, easy for my to get inside (used a 1940's wheel barrow) and they didn't charge much beyond delivery. I gave the info to one of my customers that ordered 2-3(?) cord and had it dumped in her side yard. Her neighbror under the spell of the myth said it would ruin her stove and chimney. I had not heard it before then and asked her how & assured her the wood was not treated. Nope, she had it removed and put in the dump. What a waste! She was a single mom struggling with heating bills, grew up with a wood stove our east and missed the tradition, not only did she not get the fires she wanted but also double cost of buying AND removing. All from east coast ignorance.
In our part of the country, we have tree farm licenses all around us. You can get a permit to harvest trees that have already fallen down or left in a logging setting that has been finished with. Now with a chipping company in the area, logs left in a logging setting as non-commercial use get taken away for the chip plant. Chips are sent out to pulp mills or used as hog fuel for pulp mills. Free firewood is getting hard to find.
