So, in my speculative CL bargain hunting today I got a random chain tossed in as part of a package deal. I was in a hurry and didn't pay much attention at the time, there was just an old Carlton chain box on a pile of stuff I was getting. I peered momentarily inside the cardboard box. saw darker, duller reflections off the teeth than expected, and concluded that I was getting a used chain that might've been overheated by incompetent grinding. When I got home and had time for a closer look, I got a surprise.
Nice carbide chain!! Whatcha want for it? Wait I dont have an 18" .325 do I? I think I might the 445?? Ahh hat saw wouldnt be worth throwing a carbide on though!
From what I've read, carbide isn't great chain for wood unless you're in very abrasive conditions; it's supposed to be pretty slow. I'm sure it's great to have if you need to hack your way through a roof, though.
Other chains, or more accurately, "chain." A guy on CL was selling several rolls of chain -- mostly partials but one or two full rolls of bulk chain for cheap, along with a breaker and spinner. I thought it might be fun to play with a little and sell the rest off to finance other things. This guy had done a side gig a few years back, cleaning out a farm equipment store that was closing, and they'd paid him in leftover inventory instead of cash. The chains (and a bunch of old John Deere parts) were piled in a mobile home until the guy's wife insisted he start getting rid of it. Don't get too excited; I don't have a roll of square ground or anything. It's mostly green-label Picco / low profile stuff.
