Itching to do something outside today rather than help Mrs. Suspect take down the Christmas tree and put away decorations. I picked up a slightly oversized pallet on a job site earlier this week with intentions of framing it out for firewood. I had some scrap 2x6’s and some left over 5/8” fence boards. Ran to Home Depot and picked up some 4x8x16 concrete blocks and spent the morning throwing this together. Inside dimensions are 4’ x 4’ with a front height of 6’ and 5’ in the rear. So it’ll hold just a tad over a 1/2 cord. Between the blocks(6 total, there’s two in the middle) and the tarp from Harbor Freight, I have about $25 in it. Tomorrow I’ll split some red oak and load it up. I have some used corrugated roofing I’ll eventually put on top of both.
The larger one next to it cost about $100 to build. Once again, the 2x6’s were free. The deck blocks run around $10.50 each and the 4x4 post about $10 each. Dimensions(inside) are 8’ width and 4’ deep. Top in the front is 6’ and 5’ in the back. It’s holding about 1.25 cord.
I was useless today. Had full intentions of loading up this rack with some red oak and after splitting around ten rounds, I called it quits. Wasn’t that cold this morning(around 50) but my body was chilled to the core. Came inside, took a warm shower and sat down with a hot bowl homemade vegetable soup. Took a nap, watched football and was basically useless all day. It was quite nice.
I like that design- I might steal some ideas from it! I have some of that stuff on hand already. Thanks for sharing that.
Some days you have it and some days you don't. That soup sounds like just the ticket. Tomorrow is another day.
Tell me more about these free 2x6's? I been scarfing up what I can from the reject pile at Lowes but they still don't let me have em for nothin. It was better for me when they sold bundles. Now it gets picked at. I bet the other side will get an addition before it's over. Nice work!
The Lowe's here sell it in the cull rack at half price. Been that way for a couple years now. Before that I'd get lumber for pennies on the dollar. If you find cull lumber in the good lumber rack ask someone at the pro desk and they should mark it down. Check FBM for demoed decks and free lumber. Fortunately through my work I get lots of lumber that would otherwise end up as trash.
Aesthetics are unimportant on many things I wish to build. Love that cull lumber so long as it is reasonably straight. I got more of it when they bundled rather than piece sales. Nobody wanted *everything, just what they need. I'll take all of it and find something to make from it. Really really like to get a score on some 4x6 or 6x6s. Seems like 4x4's are easy, the bigger not so much.
I work in field that has me on construction sites regularly. The amount of product that superintendents throw away at job sites is unfathomable. Surly my cost to build firewood racks is unique to me but I figured it would make for a good click bait subject line.
