Maybe this belongs in the everything else forum, but when I think about food related I come here. Moderators can move if necessary. so do we have any sourdough enthusiasts here. Growing up my dad would always make sourdough pancakes when we were camping at muzzle loading shoots. Always a big hit with the kids. Now that I’m an adult I want to try my hand at sourdough recipes. Does anyone have any tips or experience to share?
I did some years back from a starter I had gotten from a friend. You can start your own easy enough. I am OK baking bread but when it comes to things like cakes I am out. Was on a kick making bread just about every week but that fizzled out. I will make some stuffed breads over the holidays though.
My wife got her starter from a guy who claims it's been a living culture in his family since the Oregon trail. She keeps her starter living by feeding it.(Don't ask me how) The bread, muffins, pancakes, pizza dough she makes with it is amazing. Normally pancakes make me want to puke, but her sourdough pancakes are insanely good. She bought her starter online
We received a starter a month or so ago from a friend of ours whose been using it for many years. I wanna do giant soft pretzels in the pizza oven and have them perfected by next summers Hawg Dayz GTG.
Those 3 are gonna be Christmas gifts so I can’t cut into them. Also made 2 lesser loaves that should have been only one. Flavor is good, not sure the texture is as light and airy as it should be but hard to tell in a really small one that didn’t raise much. But it wasn’t such a big disappointment that I’m not doing another batch today.
My wife and I love sourdough. There's also no sugar in it, so it's even better for you. I need to get a culture going. I have a special Mason jar cap for the culture. Then that'll probably lead to me making a wood fired patio oven. My wife loves bread. I mean it might be her favorite thing to eat.
After your starter is up and running try this. Low maintenance and always ready to go. It’s the best strait to the point video I’ve found. Gramm taught me canning and this sourdough method since I was able to stand on a chair to help. She was also German so maybe it’s a thing. Sourdough and canning and you should never go hungry, was her thing. Owl
Don’t know exactly how “good” it is. What you seen in the picture was my first attempt at pancakes. I was actually quite pleased with the results though. I’m sure I’ll try again. I used starter discard. Best Sourdough Pancakes - The Clever Carrot
Just talked to a friend who just in the last week had 2 heart attacks and 6 stents put in. Interesting that his doctors told him to drop white-wheat-multigrain breads and completely switch to sour dough only to improve his health.
I ain’t no doctor but sourdough products still have flour and grains in em. hearing about things like your friend make me extremely grateful. I was born with heart defects that were corrected in my youth. Smoked for nearly 30 years. And over the past year doctors have looked at my heart about every way they know how. At my last visit with the cardiologist we went over the results of my heart cath, and as she pointed out my coronary arteries she said “ but these are pristine!”
