Some of that trunk wood is huge. How far are you going to go with it? I thought you usually passed on the big stuff?
Thats a good question. I need some more oak for customers a couple years from now. The beech is a great btu one year drying wood that's going to be decimated in the coming years plus it has a short shelf life once a dead or on the ground.
I was going tomorrow until a BL regular texted for his first cord so at least one load going tomorrow plus another delivery in North Haven.
Second load today. Started on the smallest oak (yes, I know, I know I took oak) and seemed like I didn't even make a dent in it. A little red maple thrown in for good measure. 20" bar on the 500i. Pics after I finished. The entire trunk is off the ground and clearance on both sides so a 28" bar should buck all the way through. Half cord load. Some noodled some Isocored.
My kinda tree!! Here’s where the time reduction in ported saws shines, if a fella can keep his chain off those rocks. Been there, done that.. too many darn times. Fire em up!!!
I studied it a bit. Plunge cut from the opposite side of the wall and buck all the way to the bottom leaving 1/4 of the wood uncut at the top. Do this all the way down the log then up cut to finish one at a time. Just gotta really pay attention to where the tip of the saw is. Not always an easy task on an elevated big log. I slid a chunk of a round under it too. I could bring a piece of 2x4, 2x6 etc or 3/4 plywood to put under a cut for extra "insurance" The log is wedged in both sides so it wont roll when cuts are completed. There is some metal staining on the stump end so I'll start on the top side. I cut a 3' diameter ash log for a customer years back. Him and the neighbor were about to get chains and pulleys to move the log. They were amazed I cut it as is elevated and barely had to move it. Let gravity work with you for a change.

Actually wasn't too bad that I noticed. I was kinda surprised. The little bit of red maple must've lightened the load!

No, but I think I knicked the ground and swapped out the chain. Really would've liked to use a 25" bar but not being able to roll/move the logs far I opted for the 20"
Look how straight and perfect all those rounds are. Nice score! I'd buck as big as I could and noodle them down so I don't take out my back hucking them into the truck.
